UCLA Football Recruiting: Bruins Add Transfer QB Ethan Garbers
The transfer from Washington is the younger brother of UC Berkeley QB Chase Garbers.
The UCLA Bruins added another quarterback to the roster yesterday when for former Washington QB Ethan Garbers announced that he will transfer to UCLA. Garbers made his announcement on Twitter.
Garbers was a true freshman with the Huskies this past season, though he did not see any action. The Bruins had originally recruited Garbers, but he decided to head to Seattle instead.
Garbers grew up in Orange County where he went to Corona Del Mar High School in Newport Beach. So, he is essentially coming back home by transferring to UCLA.
According to GoHuskies.com, Garbers is 6’ 3” tall and weighs in at 215 pounds.
Given that he didn’t play this past season, the only available film on Garbers comes from high school. Looking at his senior year highlights on Hudl, he seems to have a good arm while also being able to use his feet when needed.
This does raise an interesting question, though, considering that UCLA recruited Parker McQuarrie in what would have been Garbers’ recruiting class. While I get that UCLA found themselves short-handed at quarterback this past season, this makes me wonder what Chip is thinking when recruiting a guy like Garbers while already having McQuarrie, a more traditional drop-back passer on the roster.
Does it mean that Kelly has soured on McQuarrie as a prospect? Or, is this move simply about having a larger stable of quarterbacks available for next season? With Dorian Thompson-Robinson announcing that he will return for next season, it does seem to set up an interesting quarterback competition for 2022 between McQuarrie, Garbers, and current backup Chase Griffin.
But that battle is over a year away. So, for now, let’s just welcome Ethan Garbers to Westwood!
Go Bruins!!!

DTR should be a WR. He’d be great in that position.
I tell my wife NFL/College Football is the 'soap opera' for men. Here we will be 'watching' Spring
Camp trying to see how this pushes the QB competition
