Spaulding Report: UCLA Football LA Bowl Week Media Interviews
As you wait for today's game to kickoff, we've gathered all of this week's UCLA Football interviews for you in one place.

Let’s get right to this week’s interviews and see what’s been getting said at this week’s UCLA football press conferences. I’m just going to share these here all in the same place to make it easy for our readers to watch them if you haven’t already. The videos in this article are courtesy of UCLA Athletics on YouTube except for the head coaches’ LA Bowl press conference video which is courtesy of KTVB on YouTube.
First up is Chip Kelly’s interview from Monday. Kelly began his press conference answering a question about who would call the defense for today’s game. As I noted earlier in the week, Ikaika Malloe will be calling the defense for UCLA. He also explained that, because of the three coaching vacancies, Clancy Pendergast, Ken Niumatalolo, and Greg Burns would step in to cover some of the vacancies. He also addressed the fact that the guys who have entered the Transfer Portal were giving the option of playing in the game, but had decided not to. He also spoke about being with Laiatu Latu at the Lombardi Award dinner as well as the fact that Latu had opted out of the bowl game due to his schedule including finals.
Next up are Kain Medrano and Hudson Habermehl who also met with the media on Monday. Both guys spoke about how they’re focusing on giving it their all for the guys who will play their final college game tonight and they both seemed genuinely happy for both the players and coaches who have left the team since the end of the regular season.
On Tuesday, offensive lineman Josh Carlin and DB Kenny Churchwell met with the media. Both guys also spoke about the changes which have taken place. Carlin also discussed his relationship with offensive line coach Tim Drevno and actually compared him to former line coach Justin Frey. Meanwhile, Churchwell spoke about the secondary having a “Next Man Up” mentality in light of the decisions by Kamari Ramsey and John Humphrey to transfer. Churchwell wrapped up his interview talking about his academic requirements for Finals Week and how he had an eight to ten page paper to do along with a five-minute speech about John Wooden. He was amusing because he kept dropping nuggets and saying “That’s 5 more seconds there.” So, he thanked the media present for helping him with his speech. It was good stuff.
Finally today, we’re going to wrap up with the official LA Bowl press conference featuring both Chip Kelly and Boise State head coach Spencer Danielson. This video is courtesy of KTVB on YouTube.
Really, the biggest news to come out of the joint press conference is that Boise State head coach Spencer Danielson indicated that CJ Tiller will start at quarterback for the Broncos.
Kelly claimed that he’s had a lot of thoughts on how to fix college football while driving to work at 4:30 in the morning. He was asked about some of his thoughts including separating into two 64-team conferences and going from there.
Interestingly, Coach Danielson was very impressive overall and he’s definitely a coach worthy of keeping an eye on as he moves forward with the Broncos. I doubt that Boise State will be his last stop and he’s someone I can see as a possible head coaching candidate at a Power Five school in the near future.
That wraps up this week’s media interviews. UCLA plays Boise State today at 4:30 pm PT at SoFi Stadium in the LA Bowl.
