Chip is too stubborn to replace DTR at this point. That would mean he's wrong. He's tied his UCLA stint thus far to the kid. If there is a season, I'm not expecting much.
This is going to sound kind of snarky but it's genuine because I'm curious: How bad do you think DTR actually is? Because he's obviously not a *good* quarterback but he's also nowhere close to as bad as you portray him to be. Like, I think he is probably about average as a whole but the whole body of work is tough to gauge because the highs are so high and the lows are so low.
You obviously need to take the whole body of work into account but I actually think the last 6 games of the year (well, 5 of 6, the Utah game was abysmal) I think he played pretty well.
At the very least he played well enough to where I think it's unrealistic to expect a better option to be on the roster. People thought Modster was better, and he proved at Cal he was not. People thought Burton was better, but there was no legitimate evidence that he was if you look at how the offense changed, and he may get a shot at Purdue to prove he's not (although it looks like he probably won't win that starting job). I don't know how many times we're going to do the grass is always greener drill but the odds that Yankoff is better are pretty low. You don't transfer out of a school where a quarterback job is going to open up soon if you are assuredly good enough to win the job.
There are 130 FBS teams. I don't expect you to know the details of every quarterback, but if you had to ballpark how you felt about DTR, where would you generally rank him among the 130? That can be an open ended question for anyone. PFF had him I believe in the mid-80's, and that feels pretty right to me.
There's always going to be an element of recklessness to his game but I think a lot of his mistakes are pretty fixable (there's a good QB School video on him recently that goes in depth on some of that) and the highs that he gives you are why he's going to, and should, win the starting job.
Also, beating the "DTR is trash" dead horse ignores the fact that the entire offense is not very good. There hasn't been a ton of talent, especially at wide receiver and offensive line (decent individual talent on the line but no real production), and Chip has stretches where it feels like he forgot how to structure an offense entirely. Not saying DTR is free of blame but he's far from the only thing holding this team back (I think defense is a much bigger problem than offense right now).
My comment was simply that I could not put those numbers to what I saw during the games. As far as what I dislike about him, his inexperience for one. He's going to his third year so he should be showing improvement. I'm taking a "wait and see" approach. Let me answer you with question on this point; Did you feel that DTR made the kind of improvement from year 1 to year 2 that you would expect from a Div 1 QB?
Next, his bad decisions. While there was improvement from year 1 to year 2...were you happy with it? I wasn't. I would have liked to see a more mature QB instead of this good one day, bad the next.
Sure we can blame all of this one Chip and the new offense, the problems with the offensive line but there is plenty of blame to put on DTR himself. Would DTR have done better under a Mora/Fisch offense? We'll never know. But we know what we've seen so far under Chip and it leaves a lot of room for naysaying.
That's fair. I know your comment wasn't about DTR as a whole but I feel like you've definitely been one of the harsher critics of DTR going back to BN, so I was trying to summarize what I thought your general feel of him was overall, which I should've explained.
To answer your questions, I think that in that last 6 game stretch that I talked about there was a definitive improvement overall and with his decision making. It wasn't a huge jump but I think it was at least a solid building block. You could definitely make the argument that still puts him behind the curve, but I think he did enough to show he was far enough along to warrant at least leading for the starting job, given the upside.
He obviously makes bad decisions, but I think a lot of his issues, outside the basic mechanical stuff, is that he's a second late to things, and I think that's something that's pretty fixable. Maybe he doesn't fix it, and like I said there will always be some recklessness to him, but I think he's got a good shot to surprise people this year, and that video helps explain why a bit. Also, he was apparently playing on two sprained ankles that game (his own words), which is crazy and makes me respect him even more. The dude is tough as hell and wants to be out there.
Being disappointed in DTR is completely justifiable, I just don't think it's likely anyone on this current roster is much better. But that's impossible for us to know without seeing practice so if DTR gets the starting job, we can't say for sure whether he gave the other quarterbacks a fair chance to earn the job or not.
I look at those stats and can't connect them to the game footage I watched. It makes sense though, since he kept playing at Chip's insistence
I know. I'm interested in seeing whether Colson Yankoff will win the starting job this season if there is a season.
I'd put the odds of this happening at below 1%. At least winning it outright out of camp.
