Remember when Mike Leach WANTED the Ucla job?!

I think Jarmond keeps Kelly. No extension though. If I had my way I’d move heaven and earth to hire Fickell. That’s probably a pipe dream given the finances.

My question is why would Fickell want to come here? Coming to UCLA is a lateral move for him.

It was different for Mick Cronin to come to an established basketball program with a history of winning, but we have never been on that level in football.

Money is the main thing…UCLA gotta pay way more than Cincinnati right? Also it snows a lot in Cincinnati…

If Cincy gets left out of the playoff i think Fickell looks for a new spot. I just don't think it'll be UCLA.

but theres about 20 other schools who could pay Fickell the same if not more than UCLA. What is in it for Fickell to come to UCLA? That would kind of be like Cronin considering leaving UCLA for for San Diego State. What's in it for him?

No, but Azz does deserve that raise holding SuC and its true freshman QB to just 33 points and 325 yards passing.

This article had a ‘Man In The High Castle’ feel to it. I’m quite confident that Jarmond will not fire Chip. Therefore, an extension is required. At least one year but no type of buyout. Hopefully, Jarmond forces Chip to address the weaknesses on defense in order to get that extension.

Good lord the opening sequence of that show was so somber and chilling.

Truer words were never spoken. Such a terrifying show!

Of course, the moral of the story is: "Don't accept in winning what we would not accept in losing."

Azz needs to go. Plain and simple. Frankly, he should resign to make things easier on Kelly. Stanford’s defense may be worse than the Bruin D as well. It’s not pretty in Palo Alto.

Short answer to your question: No. There are numerous reasons why Chip should no longer be coaching the Bruins - many have been discussed and I won't repeat them. I will mention just one example that I'm not sure was mentioned in the articles I've read on this site. When asked by reporters after the Colorado game what adjustments were made at half time to address the unfolding debacle that was occurring on the field, Chip quickly let everyone know that no adjustments were made. Fantastic (usual) job of leadership there.

Let me ask - does anyone truly believe that Chip could do what Kyle Whittingham has done at Utah in what was perceived to be a down year at the beginning of the season for them?

We have an AD that I'm confident would like to boost his resume by helping to turn the football program. There are no shortage of football coaches looking for a new job (Dan Mullen was just let go in fact). However, if I'm in the AD's shoes, I have to believe that UCLA is not going to be the top of the list of many of those coaches. Not with USC, Florida, and LSU available as a starting point.

Instead, it makes more sense to me to target someone (head coach of a non-Power 5 conference team or a respected coordinator/coach of a Power 5 conference team) to come and infuse some energy into the program while boosting their own resumes. Could there be someone out there in the college ranks like a Brandon Staley or a Sean McVay that wants to make a name for themselves by making UCLA into a power while also proving to themselves that they can indeed lead at the Power 5 conference level? Who might that be? That's what I would like to know.

I believe that extending Chip just leads to continued mediocrity and inconsistency.

Joe, this hiring of coaches is not for the faint of heart. It looks like Dan Mullen is out at Florida. Does anyone think that Steve Sarkisian is an upgrade from Tom Herman? Another previous hot commodity, Justin Fuentes is out at Virginia Tech. Mike Norvell is struggling at Florida State. Scott Frost is far from setting the world on fire at Nebraska. Plus, I have always thought Mario Cristobal was all recruit and not much coach. I fully expected Utah to handle Oregon easily last night and they did. Utah plays defense and has the best coach in the Pac-12. Year in and year out, they defend even though their recruiting classes are not highly regarded. On a side note, the 3 top QB's in the country are all from Southern Calif. Unfortunately, they are playing for Alabama, Ohio State and Mississippi. Recruiting talent into the Pad-12 has never been more difficult than it is now. So, while I understand the reservations regarding Chip Kelly, the solution is not a simple on. Also, we don't know what other issues Martin Jarmond is dealing with financially. However, I do believe as I have said repeatedly, if Chip Kelly refuses to replace Azzinaro with a new DC, we should part ways. I think that some of the coaches listed above could do well at UCLA. Tom Herman is a solid football coach and we might have a shot with him. I don't think that Dave Aranda or Luke Fickell are realistic possibilities. I'd be curious as to what coaching candidates make sense to you.

I'll tell you what. If Florida still wants Chip Kelly, they can have him.

Mullen, who was hired days after UCLA hired Kelly, finishes at Florida with a 34-15 record and he's out. Hmmmm.....

i don't think Mullen should have been fired. The whole league is a bit nuts trying to beat Saban. Plus, Mullen does have a bit of an odd personality and may have rubbed some people the wrong way. Who knows? I also wonder if Clancy Pendergast has been the DC in waiting or a backup plan to replace Azzinaro. I know that he was hired as an "analyst" of opposing defenses. Time will tell. At least Clancy has had some success as a DC, although his most recent stint with SC was mediocre. Plus, there was talk that he doesn't like to recruit much.

I want to say "Yes hire Clancy" but I can't bring myself to be that mean.

Probably an upgrade from Azz.

I would not extend Kelly unless he dumps Azzinaro. If he says "Im keeping him". Then they all go. period. A win over a coachless Quarterback-less down year Trogan team with an experienced senior laden team isn't an accomplishment.

Yesterday Suc went 75 yards on two plays in 26 seconds...and when they cut the lead to 9 I remember thinking we could lose this game...Azz has to go, period. No extension for Chip unless he hires a new coordinator and recruits. And then it's for one year or no extension and we'll negotiate at the end of the year based upon the 2022 results. If next year shows they cant beat a team with a winning record we're done. I would say fire now, but Luke Fickel isn't coming and I'm really wary of another mediocre retread. Next hire Has to be a winner

A extension is OK, bottom line is the demise of the Pac12 is kind of at hand.

The Mountain West Conference is ascending and the Big12 might take in refugees from the Titanic which is the Pac12. BTW I think Chip is biding his time and would be a perfect fit at a Big12 program (lots of offense and no defense).

It's not dead in the water yet. I think Kilavkoff can salvage something yet. Anything has to be an improvement over Larry Scott.

I’m not endorsing or saying UCLA shouldn’t give an extension to Chip Kelly, but if UCLA didn’t let him go sooner with a losing record, I highly doubt they will let him go now. However, if the metrics being used to give him an extension is the last 3 years (not counting this season) he shouldn’t get one, and he should have been fired at the end of last season. If the metrics is this last year, I do think there is enough on the offensive side of the ball to believe the program is moving at a turtles pace on the right direction. Defensively, it’s been less than stellar with a few good spots here and there. If I’m pressed for an answer right now, I’d much rather stick with Chip Kelly for one more season than toss lots of money to someone who might not be what UCLA needs, added to the fact that these other Power 5 schools looking for a coach might hike up what a coach could get paid.

Keep Kelly only because I can't take another 4 years of "rebuilding" excuses from the next new guy. Get off our Azz tho. Wow. On second thought, dump Chip now, and kick his Azz outta here. NO MAS

Winning records against mediocre opponents does not win conference championships. Having a DC that has never done press conferences is unacceptable. I am an old ass but I do know social media is huge with most folks/recruits. Further it is a major character flaw regarding our DC. And Kelly condones this behavior.
