UCLA Football: Clemens and Latu Named to Preseason Award Watch Lists
The Outland Trophy is presented to the nation's most outstanding interior lineman while the Bronko Nagurski Trophy honors the nation's most outstanding defensive player.
The release of the college football preseason watch lists are the first sign that football season is almost here. In the past, this usually occurred in mid-July before the conferences held their annual media days.
This year, the National College Football Awards Association has rebranded a bit with a new logo and website that’s a big improvement over the old site. They also pushed back the release of this year’s watch lists.
The watch list for the Maxwell Award, which honors the college football player of the year, was released yesterday without a Bruin being named to it.
Today’s release of the Bronko Nagurski Trophy and the Outland Trophy watch lists saw a Bruin earn a spot on each list as senior defensive end Laiatu Latu and offensive lineman Duke Clemens were named to those watch lists, respectively.
The Bronko Nagurski Trophy honors the nation’s most outstanding defensive player while the Outland Trophy is given to the nation’s most outstanding interior lineman.
The Football Writers’ Assocation of America selects the winners of both awards. The Bronco Nagurski Trophy is presented by the Charlotte Touchdown Club and the Outland Trophy is presented by the Greater Omaha Sports Committee.
The FWAA and the Charlotte Touchdown Club will announce finalists for the 2023 Bronko Nagurski Trophy on Nov. 15 and the winner will be unveiled Dec. 4 at the Bronko Nagurski Awards Banquet in Charlotte, N.C.
The recipient of the 2023 Outland Trophy will be announced on The Home Depot College Football Awards, live on ESPN in December. The official presentation to the winner will be made at the Outland Trophy Awards Dinner sponsored by Werner Enterprises and produced by the Greater Omaha Sports Committee in Omaha, Neb., on Jan. 10, 2024.
Founded in 1997, the NCFAA includes college football’s most prestigious awards and its 24 awards have honored more than 900 recipients dating back to 1935. This season, 12 NCFAA awards will honor national players of the week each Tuesday.
