UCLA Football: Chase Griffin Named to Wuerffel Trophy Watch List
The Wuerffel Trophy is presented to the player who best combines exemplary community service with athletic and academic achievement.
Whew! It’s been a really busy UCLA news day today — the busiest one in months.
First, came the news that Chancellor Gene Block is retiring. Then, Aday Mara has signed with the UCLA men’s basketball team. There are two more bits of info to share with all of you today.
I’m going to start with the elephant in the room. Earlier this afternoon, I was asked if it was true that UCLA AD Martin Jarmond has interviewed for the vacant AD spot across town.
Apparently, I had missed this tweet from Trojans Zone:
TMB sources have indicated that this report is false. Jarmond has not interviewed for the job.
With that out of the way, let’s get to the real news.
UCLA senior quarterback Chase Griffin was named to the 2023 Wuerffel Trophy watch list today.
The Wuerffel Trophy, named after Florida’s 1996 Heisman Trophy winner Danny Wuerffel, is college football’s premier award for community service. That makes the Wuerffel Trophy the only award in college football which honors student-athletes for their off-the-field performance.
The Wuerffel Trophy watch list for the 2023 season, consists of 108 players from across the country.
“The life changing impact of thinking of others before ourselves is so rewarding, and it’s truly inspiring to see so many student-athletes recognize this, and use their platform for good,” said Danny Wuerffel. “College Football players across the country are making a difference in their communities, and I’m excited to see so many incredible stories associated with the 2023 Wuerffel Trophy candidates.”
Nominations for the Wuerffel Trophy are made by the respective universities’ Sports Information Departments and will close on October 16. An up-to-date list of nominees can be found at wuerffeltrophy.org. Semifinalists for the award will be announced on November 2nd, and finalists will be announced on November 28th. The formal announcement of the 2023 recipient is scheduled to be made during The Home Depot College Football Awards on ESPN in December, and the presentation of the 2023 Wuerffel Trophy will take place on February 17, 2024, at the College Football Hall of Fame in Atlanta, Georgia.

Also from The Sporting News: Their rookie quarterback out of UCLA, Dorian Thompson-Robinson, shined in the second half and gave Cleveland fans something to look forward to for the next month. "DTR" made plays with his legs, arm and even threw a great block that led to a Browns touchdown.
Looking at this year's schedule, Ucla should be able to run the table.
