I feel bad for Deshaun. I don’t fault him. I think he poured his heart and soul into a job he wasn’t yet qualified to do. The fault lies with Martin Jarmond and I can only hope that he is not allowed to hire the next coach.

gbruin's avatar

100% agree, Army

Actually, make it 1,000% agree.

..over to you!

bruinballer's avatar

One down, one to go!

That was a classy goodbye statement. I hope it was actually from Foster!

Tamara's avatar

Yep, Jelly 2.0 should have been fired at the same time, along with most of the coaching staff.

This next week will be telling as to whether or not Julio Frenk really cares about ALL of UCLA Athletics.

Surely big donors and decision influencers regarding UCLA Athletics know that Jelly 2.0 is a complete and total fake, phony and fraud, and is incapable of any hire, not just Football.

Frenk can either make or break UCLA Athletics at this point.

We are still stuck with Jarmond who hired Foster.

Evan's avatar

Jarmond cannot be allowed to hire his replacement.

Ron's avatar

Wow. Sad for him and the whole team, but it was the right call. He was in over his head, not ready for a HC role in a major conference. I'm not confident that Jarmond will be the one who can land us the right coach for the future. He was the one in charge when Chip left the program in a horrible spot.

The Last Reel's avatar

Now, file Martin Jarmond. And sue Chip Kelly, and nullify the extensions given under false pretenses to his hack assistants.

Joe Piechowski's avatar

Chip Kelly's extensions were nullified when he left and bought out his contract.

DeShawn - thanks for stepping in to a terrible situation last-minute last season. You know as well as anyone this wasn't working and was actually spiraling to a very dark place. With the passage of time, I hope you'll come to truly realize this is best for the program we all love.

I'd imagine that there's no chance Jarmond is allowed to hire the next coach - AD searches take longer to conduct properly than elevating an existing staff member to rest of season interim...

Go Bruins

Running a company when we fire someone we always create/have options on the replacement. A guarantee you the administration has no clue on their next move. Deer in headlights. No clue.

BigB88's avatar

It's pretty easy on the "next move". Fire Martin Jarmond and begin a rebuild. It will take a while, but if Frenk puts in just decent people, they can rebuild the Athletic Dept and be somewhat successful in a few years. I think Frenk may have a clue, since he did similar at Miami. This is actually a perfect situation for UCLA because I believe Frenk is a temp hire anyway, someone brought in the "clean things up" after Block & Guerror ruined the University and ruined it in more than just Athletics.

Clio 98's avatar

He has only been Chancellor for 9 months, inaugurated 3 months ago, during which he's has more than a few other pressing issues to deal with - and if you don't live in LA currently you honestly can't imagine what it's actually been like on some fronts - so I'm willing to give a little grace.... not to mention I'd be pretty suspicious of a snap top-of-our-head AD hire. I'd rather we get it right and fix it

ArmyBruin's avatar

Does anyone really think that Jarmond fired Foster? This seems more like the Chancellor’s decision to me.

4merKPer's avatar

Hopefully, Frenk told Martin, "if you F*** this up, your're next."

Tamara's avatar

He has already done so. Jelly 2.0 must go.

ArmyBruin's avatar

I wouldn’t be surprised if Jarmond is gone before the new coach is hired.

4merKPer's avatar

That would be evidence that UCLA is really serious. Frenk should be conducting his own search for a new AD.

Evan's avatar

do not underestimate UCLA's ability to fuck this up.

4merKPer's avatar

Class of '77 and 20-year season ticket holder. Believe me, my passion bucket is empty and full of holes.

ArmyBruin's avatar

I don’t think we know who is doing what at this point. Jarmond may just be the mouthpiece.

4merKPer's avatar

If UCLA is like most large institutions, they don't know who is doing what either. 🤪

Joe Piechowski's avatar

I would suggest it was more like, "You need to fire him now." Had he refused, Jarmond probably would have been first, and he knew it.

Tamara's avatar

Yes, this must have been Frenk, now it's Jelly's turn to exit. I love DeShaun as a person and Bruin, and I know he will find his way back. Jelly is the true cancer and he still has an office in Morgan.

Frenk must know this, will see what he decides, but there is only one right decision and all eyes are on Frenk.

JF88's avatar

Agree. Jarmond doesn't have the cajones or wisdom to make that move.

ArmyBruin's avatar

I think UCLA should take a close look at Pat Fitzgerald, former Northwestern HC. It appears that Northwestern erred in terminating him. He succeeded in a tough place and he should be on the list of candidates.

Runfastandwin's avatar

Never going to happen given Fitxgerald’s history. There’s more to being a good HC than winning.

Evan's avatar

The allegations were bogus. Another unfortunate case of assuming allegations are fact. University issued this statement: “The evidence uncovered during extensive discovery did not establish that any player reported hazing to Coach Fitzgerald or that Coach Fitzgerald condoned or directed any hazing,” the university said in a statement. He sued them and settled for several million.

That said, his track record was not all that impressive. 4-20 his last 2 seasons. 14-31 his last 4. Pass.

Runfastandwin's avatar

NW investigates NW, finds NW did everything right and nothing wrong. Also NW deserves a raise.

Martin Courtney's avatar

So it wasn't too early for a coaching change. Who's next?

Evan's avatar

I hope not, but honestly someone of his caliber might be the best we can do. He would have been an infinitely better hire than Foster. Would like to think we can get a top 20 coach though.

gbruin's avatar

No! No! Please god no! NOOOOOOO!!!

<insert Michael Scott meme>

Tamara's avatar

What do you all think about Skipper being named as Interim HC?

Chenalex's avatar

He was probably the obvious choice since he had prior interim HC experience which the coordinators don’t have.

Evan's avatar

only coach on staff with HC experience.

Chenalex's avatar

Maybe the new chancellor really does care about football.

Runfastandwin's avatar

Maybe? It’s a massive fundraiser done right.

kingjim1954's avatar

It supports competitive underwater basket weaving and more.

Bruin4ever's avatar

Yep, very sad indeed, a bad hiring decision by the AD that needed to be undone. But no hate on DSF (or any other Bruin alumni) for taking on such a challenging position at their beloved alma mater under very tough circumstances and trying their best to succeed.

Hugo L. Ramirez Palma's avatar

I have an honest question, if Jarmond were to be fired, is the next AD going to get better facilities, more funding through NIL money to compete with other universities in the Big10 for recruits, will students, alumnis, and and fans going to be interested like some of our other Big10 counterparts, will it be same issue with a different AD in charge. There was another user, on the previous article that commented about some of these issues- again, speaking out of my lack of full knowledge, but it is tough to do a good job when you have one hand tied up behind your back when it comes to certain aspects of the collegiate game now a days.

Evan's avatar

if he hires the right head coach, then all of that will flow to success. It will result in more NIL money, which is really all that matters.

fruithi's avatar

Disagree. The current administration from top to bottom does not understand what it takes to compete in today’s college football culture. We need to hire some visionary(ies) (ie steal someone from Oregon, LSU, damn even Utah) that runs the sports department like a big business. Call that person a CEO for all it matters. The last 20 years have been a cluster regarding football and we continue to make the same mistakes thinking things will improve. Hiring a “gotcha” head coach isn’t changing anything. The sports program needs to be totally reevaluated. People have to be held accountable. We need to hire business people who understand the competitive environment and make changes all the way down to moving out of the Rose Bowl. Having a $219.55 million deficit is a great example of mismanagement. If it was a private enterprise the powers to be would have been fired years ago. How embarrassing.

BigB88's avatar

Put it this way, if the University of California can rebuild their athletics, which they have done more than successfully, led by their football program, then UCLA can easily do the same. UC Berkeley is under the same thumb as UCLA is on their limits and capabilities, and they have done a stellar job in the past few years with their Athletic programs. Just look at their current football program as an example.

Evan's avatar

did you just say Cal has done a stellar job with its football program? it's late, so maybe i missed the sarcasm.

BigB88's avatar

Take a look at their record and tell me they haven't improved. Unless you think 3-0 is a poor record at this point in the season. You may say they haven't played anyone, but other than Utah, neither has UCLA.

SEAUCLAn's avatar

This search committee should not include anyone from the last search committee who so wisely selected Chip Kelly.

Evan's avatar

wouldn't it be nice if we had an AD that didn't need a search committee? WTF is a search committee. Are there coaches out there that we don't know about, for whom a search is required so that we can find them? Everyone knows who the best available coaches are. We need a competent ID to identify the right one and convince him to come.

BigB88's avatar

Completely agree, a "search committee" is used to offload responsibility and place blame on someone else. Normally they are worthless at selecting the right candidate, like a Chipster Kelly.

ArmyBruin's avatar

There wasn’t a real search committee when Kelly was hired. Troy Aikman knew Kelly through ESPN and knew Kelly was interested in the job but wouldn’t express interest because Jim Mora was still the head coach. UCLA then fired Mora. Not sure if Mora would have been fired at that time otherwise.

Evan's avatar

I sincerely feel bad for him. He was simply not qualified for the job and was placed in an impossible position. He's a great guy and a great Bruin. Yes, he accepted the job, but who in their right mind would turn down the dream job they aspire to? This one is on Jarmond for not naming an interim HC and conducting a real HC search after last season. We should be in week 3 of a brand new head coach being paid about $8 mil a year. Jarmond should be fired immediately (I won't feel bad for him). Hopefully Foster lands on his feet and gets an OC job or HC job at a mid major.

fruithi's avatar

Based on our current athletic department deficit we couldn’t afford a $8 million coach. It’s bankrupt my friend. Mismanaged to the bone. And the current administration obviously doesn’t give a crap.

Clio 98's avatar

If they didn't give a crap, they'd of waited until December 2nd to save buyout money. Firing him now kinda shows at least someone in the administration does give a crap, no?

fruithi's avatar

Guarantee you no one in the administration has a road map on how to go forward. Firing the head coach is easy. Giving a crap is getting rid of the cancer in the hierarchy of the athletic department. Now that’s giving a crap.

Bruin4ever's avatar

The administration was pressured into doing something, so firing the HC immediately was the easiest thing to do (it was actuallly a no-brainer, anyway) to try and curtail the mounting criticism and frustration. But yes, the "cancer" still exists, and Martin Guerrero should be the next one to be fired. Otherwise, we have an apathetic Frenkenstein who doesn't give a crap with the ongoing mediocrity.

Evan's avatar

they really did not have a choice though

Joe Piechowski's avatar

Look at where Miami is now. That's because Frenk fixed it.

To be sure, he didn't get them a stadium closer to campus, but the program is on solid footing with Cristobal.

We'll see what happens next.

Bruin4ever's avatar

Crossing my fingers! (on both hands)

Evan's avatar

disagree with this.
