Viva Las Vegas! 3-Seed UCLA Faces 11-Seed Washington in Pac-12 Women's Quarterfinal
The Bruins will take on the Huskies tonight after Washington eliminated Colorado last night.
The UCLA women’s basketball team finished the regular season in third place in the Pac-12 Conference standings behind Stanford and Arizona. That was good enough to earn a first round bye. Now, tonight, the Bruins will face the Washington Huskies, the worst team left in the tournament.
Last Time Out
The Bruins last played last Friday when they hosted the Southern Cal Trojans. The team whose slogan is “Fight On!” really didn’t put up much of a fight and UCLA demolished Southern Cal, 93-51.
Believe it or not, the Trojans actually led in this game. Once. At 3-2. Southern Cal even managed to tie it with 2:49 left. Of course, that was 2:49 left in the first quarter. The next 12:49 sealed the fate of the game as the Bruins outscored the Trojans 34-14 in the remainder of the half.
The second half was another clinic as UCLA put up 50 second half points. That’s right. The Bruins scored just one point less in the second half than the Trojans did for the entire game.
In other words, all was right in the universe. Hopefully, the men’s team took notice, though, after last night, I’m not so sure.
Michaela Onyenwere led all scorers with 30 points. It was the fourth time in her UCLA career where scored at least 30 points. But, it was Charisma Osborne’s triple-double with 18 points, 11 rebounds and 12 assists that resulted in Osborne earning Pac-12 Player of the Week honors for the third time this season.
Washington Huskies
Last night, the Huskies upset six-seeded Colorado, 68-54, to advance to tonight’s quarterfinal game. That said, tonight’s game should be the Huskies’ final game in this year’s tournament.
That’s because in their sole meeting this year, the Bruins crushed Washington. The final score wasn’t quite as bad as the game against Southern Cal last Friday, but UCLA still won the game, which was played in Seattle, by 34 points, 84-50. Last night’s win aside, there’s absolutely no indication that tonight’s result should be much different than when the teams met last month.
