For the record, Harris basically downplayed the Pro Bono thing in his conversation with David Woods and Tracy Pierson. You can find that video in last weekend's Spaulding Report.
He explained that, basically, he and Chancellor Frenk agreed that it is more important for him to get to work than to spend time now negotiating a contract. I suspect that when they do put ink to paper, he will either get a contract that's retroactive to the start of his term or receive some sort of signing bonus intended to compensate him for that time.
TRUE! When I was a student starting in 1973 all the football games AND transportation were free. Basketball too as far as free entrance. What a hoot back then.
..in 1964 (my freshman year) we received student IDs with our picture on them each year that -- as I recall -- had little boxes that could be punched out for each football game and basketball game at home (obviously). So, perforce, the games were free.
The downside to FB was, of course, that we played in the Mausoleum which was the Toe Jam's house. I remember sitting in the student section which were prime seats opposite the press box along with a fraternity brother (Steve Donnegan) -- both of us four sheets to the wind -- when the ref blew a P/I call high, wide, and handsome! Steve let out with one of the funniest taunts I'd ever heard..
"Aw jeez, ref, open your eyes! You're missing one hell of a game!"
(..well, it was funny at the time!)
The Mausoleum was the drizzlies but it did have it's upside. For example, being in the stands when Beban and crew beat Garret and the Toe Jams 20-16 with that 4th quarter duo-bomb rally and coming back the next year to have Norm Dow and Cornell Champion beat them again in the double-reverse with a 1-1/2 twist "unvenge" 14-7 win!
Thankfully, I missed the OJ 21-20 game the following year...but, believe me, OJ* didn't win that game! Zenon Andrusyshyn (RIP) blew a FG and had two blocked extra points!*
Youse guys got it great playing in the Rose Bowl. It's where the Bruins belong!
Bold move indeed going forward! The decades of AD apathy and incompetence has finally ended. We now have a dedicated alumnus who is breaking the frustrating tradition of continuous mediocrity being acceptable AND also trying to clean up the equally-awful financial mess left behind by his predecessor, whose best effort involved covering large swaths of empty seats with tarps and releasing inflated attendance numbers to conceal his burning dumpster fire. The wooden horse is ready to transport the ash heap to the Mausoleum!
Huzzah for Harris! Let's start tearing down and burning those horrid tarps. Make UCLA football UCLA football Again!

The stark contrast between Cronin's 'style' and Chesney's is under the bright lights now.

I get it. The fact that he rolled up his sleeves and got to work without a contract speaks volumes in and of itself.
Before I graduated in 1982 - UCLA students attended these events for FREE! Tim Harris remembers this and has brought back a tradition. Go Bruins!
