Another DTR ball falling out his hand cost 3 points, then Allen getting run down on a sure KR TD cost us another 4 points. That plus SWISS CHEESE defenseless cost us the game.
Ryan Day of Ohio St. was so pissed off with his team's defensive performance against Oregon, he moved and demoted his defensive coordinator Kerry Coombs to the press box coaches booth and took his play calling responsibilities away, essentially neutering him without firing him. When asked by the press if this was a permanent move, day replied "Yes it is". This is what Kelly should do with Azzinaro, but he won't. The big difference... Day is a very good coach that will not tolerate poor play on either side of the ball or loses for that matter and unfortunately Kelly doesn't care about poor defensive play as he figures his offense can simply outscore the opponent no matter what his defense does and as for accumulating loses, we have already seen Kelly would care less, based on his overall record since leaving Oregon, Kelly seems to prefer losing to winning. Stanford will have a blast against this defense. Probably another 40-point game for the Cardinal and unfortunately the UCLA defense, if you can even call it a defense.
This is a coaching issue. Fresno State said we will stop your running backs and #85 catching the ball. They did. Ucla did not scheme to stop #5 and he was great. The Bulldog QB threw darts.
Two offsides on 4th down? Allen taking a kick out of the end zone to finish on the 9 yardline? Burning a time out on a PAT? Not spiking the ball after a 1st down? Situational preparations completely lacking.
DTR throws a flat deep ball..... Allows defense to get there when short and prevents receiver from getting there when over thrown.
The only thing new was on the last play DTR didn't take a sack or run it.
You can certainly highlight all the individual mess ups and screw ups. Fact is that any team that allows 569 yards of total offense, 455 yards of which were through the air will not win many games unless their respective offense has more yards and points to go along with it, which was not the case here. The better team won, its pretty simple. Kelly's philosophy of simply outscoring the opponents puts way too much pressure on the offense and currently UCLA doesn't have the offense that can withstand that kind of pressure. People tend to pin it on DTR and say "he lost it for us", no he actually played (overall) quite well and well enough to win. No, the defense and especially the defensive coaches lost this one.
I agree with a lot of what you say, BB88. DTR scarcely saw the ball in the first half (due mainly to our horrific defensive scheme that allowed Fresno to possess the ball and run 3 times as many plays as us) and he made a lot of great plays in the second half. Unfortunately, he made (another) critical mistake with the non contact fumble, but if we had a consistent run game, or it our defense (including the coaching staff here) had been minimally competent for the game or made one clutch stop on either drive in the last 3 minutes, then we could have survived one DTR mistake. There is plenty of blame to go around for last night, and anyone who puts this game on DTR is overlooking a host of much bigger problems.
AP poll just came out. UCLA is still in it! At #24. What a joke. Just shows you these polls are really BS. Its okay, Stanford will take care of the AP poll ranking this coming weekend. Fresno St is #22 by the way, well deserved.
I'm surprised Fresno is only 22. Their one loss was at Oregon by a touchdown, and the Ducks are now #3/4 in the country. Fresno deserves a lot higher ranking than 22 right now.
As for us, we showed last night why we didn't deserve our ranking.
All the demons of bad U.C.L.A. football came back to haunt the Bruins last night and collectively cost us a winnable football game. We saw the same old giant cushions in our secondary that got called out by the in-game and in-studio analysts and that gave Fresno easy pitch and catch gains and long ball control drives; we saw an inability by our coaching staff to adapt to Fresno selling out to shut down our running backs; we saw a completely wrong decision to go for a 2 point conversion; we saw another inexplicable non contact fumble by our QB; we saw a wasted timeout in crunch time on the opponent's PAT that put enormous limitations on our final possession; we saw not one but two undisciplined offsides penalties on Fresno punts to give the ball right back to them; we saw Fresno's injured QB who could scarcely jog allowed to stand comfortably in the pocket and throw where he wanted; and we saw another fatal inability to play clutch defense in the final minutes of a game.
Bad schemes, bad coaching, bad in game decisions, bad discipline, and bad execution by our coaching staff and players when it mattered most...yeah, we've seen that before.
I'm still so angry about last night's game, but some of that anger is directed at myself for believing that things might be different this year. I'm so dumb.
Just when you thought? Dreams don't last long. The LSU game was a different team. What happened to that Bruin team? "I guess you can't teach an old dog new tricks." The Fresno game was the last four years, accumulated into the last few seconds of the Fresno game. The defense was the same passive approach from the last three years. Then to celebrate before the game ended left a bad taste in my mouth.
Statistically, Ucla was beaten in every category.
Can someone please explain, on paper, Ucla is suppose to have the better athletes, right? I believe most of Fresno State players, if had the opportunity to play for Ucla, would. Why do players from similar smaller state universities play with more urgency and aggressiveness? I realize Kelly searches for certain type of player and isn't interested in the four & five star players
as much, believing he can mold his players. Well, it's four years later and the mold has cracked. The so called culture, is inconsistency.
Finally, I'm not big fan of DTR. His play continues to be consistent with the same mistakes he made from his freshman year . I believe he isn't leader the team needs. From this point forward, I would expect for this team to continue to lose games in last quarter. Stanford is next and they are not as bad as many thought.

4 Straight losses to Fresno St so I guess it wasn’t an upset? Not acceptable
Those two plays are exactly what came to mind as costing the game - ignoring the other deficiencies.

Azz needs to go. This L is on the defense. No way we should lose with 54 sec
left and only needing to stop a TD. The big issue is that FSU has given other teams the blueprint to beat UCLA unless the defense changes.
Thank you, Mick Cronin! Thank you for your life for you have given us ours! 51 days until basketball!

Azzinaro will not get fired! LMAO, CHIP says he's a great teacher!

I wrote some comments but they did not get posted so let me just say to Joe - you made some "right on" points on Azzinaro's pathetic defense.
