As I said before, I only watched the highlights on YouTube afterwards. What I saw was what I expected - another flop, another hard to watch game. The bruins' performance on the field proved me right. Although it is merely mid September, the prospect for Foster to right the sinking ship appears dimmer by the day. Wait till we play the likes of Michigan and Ohio State, I think I will seek refuge in church, pray that the divine lord will calm my jittery nerves and overwhelming fear.
Henry, old friend! Sorry to be so late in replying but I had to primer my Jeep and clean out the septic tank.*
I had wondered about DSF keeping his current employment. I was highly doubtful that he'd get canned until, as you did, I saw the replays. My stars, there really isn't anyone on the defense that can tackle -- nor can they cover the run or the pass.
But the stunner -- and I mean no offense to DSF -- was the post-debacle press show-up mumblefest! I dunno whether it's shyness or embarrassment on his part because of the stinko zero-and-three record, but that poor soul cannot seem to transmit and receive ideas verbally, kind of like Strother Martin's line in Cool Hand Luke..
"What we have here is a failure to commun'cate.."
I respect DSF's athletic achievements as a Bruin star but the "Locked On.." YouTube video hosts just roasted the guy alive as did the reporters during that interview. The professional press were just brutal, asking questions like "how do you account for the product on the field right now, offense, defense and penalties..?" and "..do you still feel you're the right coach to lead this program?"
Ouch!
Sad thing is that his answers were truly bewildering. For example re penalties (13 for 116 yards) and his response re penalties, "..we're not good enough to keep having the type of penalties we're having..we gotta be almost perfect out there."
Huh?
Well, I am stealing bread off of Joe's and Dimitri's plates but the session was stupefying!
One salient observation was that DSF was hired with zero managerial/organizational coaching experience; that he was plucked from the ranks of the lower echelon hyper-specialized coaches. You know, like the guy they hire to offer advice to "all left side cornerbacks whose last name begins with the letter P..", etc.
I see that, as Joe impishly suggests, they are guaranteed not to lose next Saturday (they have a bye) but are facing North Worstern the following Saturday whereupon UCLA will most likely end up with four losses. So the big question now becomes will/when will The Fetus pull the string on DSF? Also, what's the over/under on RB attendance and how many seating sections will be covered with tarps?
You know, like those Vegas betting propositions offered by bookies who want to amp the handle and generate interest in an otherwise dull contest?
Chances are the next game would be equally devastating. If so, it then becomes an endurance test for the UCLA administration. How much more can they stomach ? When is enough is enough ? Not until UCLA football resembles Hiroshima after being nuked ?
The UCLA athletic department currently resembles Hiroshima, Nagasaki, the Bikini Atoll, and various Nevada test sites all rolled into one! It's one huge smoldering DGZ* suffused with deadly radioactivity at present, old son!
Track down 4merKPer's ChatGPT post and read the devastating analysis. This has been going on since Toledo's era; the Athletics Department being run by incompetents who negotiate business deals as you would expect academics to do. Further, the football program and, perforce, the rest of the athletic teams' are an afterthought and not the focus of this university. (There is nothing that forbids a world class institution from running a profitable business of putting fans' butts in the seats to provide revenue for the rest of the academics.)
The much maligned Jay-Dee-Doo did this in the 60s: focused the Football and basketball program around a couple of good coaches. The Wizard was one with his magnificent skein of Natties. Jay-Dee-Doo, also had a world class tennis program and kicked royal ass in T&F and Swimming, etc. But it died a slow, lingering death along with Morgan, reaching crash dive status in the late 90s and early oughts.
Again, read 4merKPer's post! It is an AI derived parable of earth-shaking, Richter 9 magnitude!
What is also just peachy is that the entire world is gleaning joy from our suffering because of our team’s decision to bring in a mercenary QB under the circumstances in which they did.
I’ve been seeing that and Tennessee fans can fuck the hell off. Most of us Bruin fans didn’t want any part of the Nico/Nico’s dad/NIL bs mess. That’s on the AD and coaching staff. Those guys can stop pointing fingers and laughing at Bruins fans anytime. If anything, we have an awful lot in common.
For me, Tenn fans built up a lot of goodwill for being such gracious and humble hosts when we beat them in Knoxville in 2009. That goodwill is now gone.
..as a waggish reply, I fear they may even fail to achieve this goal. My prediction -- and I never thought I would ever be this sour on UCLA athletics -- but there will be a decision point down the road where a job or jobs may be hanging in the balance* and the Bruins will eke out a fluke win thereby not only spoiling a "perfect record" but saving said jobs and facilitating a SALARY RAISE AND BONUS a la The Chipster, etc.
I'm sorry, but I can't see this team even "eking out" a win against a Northwestern or a Maryland (two lower ranked Big10 teams). If you can't defeat UNLV or New Mexico, you are definitely not going to beat another Big10 team, even "eking it out". I'm standing by my 0-12 prediction. If they fire Jarmond & Foster, then they could probably win a couple of Big10 games. But this is 2025 UCLA Athletics, they hold no one accountable. Hence Jarmond & Foster both stay and the program just sinks further and further down and yes it can go further down.
..well, I just had quaffed a tot of dill pickle juice, was feeling a little dour*, and wanted to spread the joy! All of the below meant respectfully:
Seriously, I do not see how relieving Jarmond and DSF of their responsibilities mid-season will avert the smoking hole that UCLA is crash diving into. I mean, despite the fact that Halloween candy and decorations will soon be appearing soon thereafter followed by fake Christmas trees and decorations, you cannot just run down to the local WalMart or Costco and pick up one of those bargain sale AD & Head Coach Two-Packs.
Honest inquiry: is there someone currently on staff or available on the market UCLA could put into DSF's slot? Same-same for Jarmond?
And, boy howdy do I agree with you about no one in the AD department being held accountable. This started back in the early 2000s (I'm telling you this?) with the tenure of Karl Dorrell, his perceived incompetence as coach,"losing record", and plummeting RB attendance. By comparison, Coach Dorrell was decent! Only now, it's gotten so awful that, as 4merKPer so aptly put it, "A beautiful evening at the Rose Bowl spoiled".
I am in earnest in my wish that Jarmond be shown the bricks. He is traipsing in the footsteps of Guerror and this cancer needs to be excised ASAP! The way this clown handed out new contracts with bonuses and rewards for basically doing zero zip bupkis was damned near criminal.
Someone cue up Jackson Browne's "Running on Empty", will you?
*Later this afternoon I shall turn to the fifth of Dewars I had set aside.
The one positive of firing the HC now is it sends a message (to Bruin fans, to the conference, and to any HC candidate) that UCLA is serious about football.
I just wish the AD was part of the firing package.
As strange as it sounds, social media might be the thing that rights the ship for UCLA. The school and its reputation are getting hammered from so many sources and a lot of them are legitimate sports commentators as opposed to trolls. How long can the school and thereby administration be called out for the state of the football program and do nothing? I doubt Jarmond or Foster will ever see them since they block anyone pretty much everyone. lol
I suppose the backlash can be expected after most folks had picked UCLA to easily handle UNM at home and win by at least 2 TDs, but then the Bruins instead showed up with an awful performance and lose by 25. The DRE nonsense sure isn't working, or maybe it's actually consistent with the results we're seeing.
DeShawn - thanks for stepping in to a terrible situation last-minute last season. With the passage of time, I hope you'll come to realize this is best for the program we all love.
There are 14 days until the next game - bye weeks are usually the time when bad or failing coaches truly turn into endangered species. Being at the Rose Bowl last night - and, yes, staying till the bitter end along with 15-odd thousand other masochists - I take War's point about not knowing who's qualified on staff or even available to replace CDF right now but I think the true question and calculation is: is it worth the cost of the buyout as it stands today to counter the toxic apathy that currently surrounds the program given that there's no reason to imagine it abating if things continue as they are and no changes are made?
If he survives the bye, he'll almost certainly survive the season. Personally, I'd echo FDR in a time of depression and crises following policies of inertia - "try something and if it doesn't work, try something else but for God's sake try something!"
Maybe we should’ve kept Joey Aguilar. He threw a perfect 72-yd TD to a receiver that was being held against Georgia. Nico has thrown two late game INTs to far lesser teams and both times he was given time to throw. Its a wonder how he ever lead Tennessee to the playoffs. It’s amazing what strong coaching can do to hide a QBs flaws
I was gonna say(checks notes) " Wasn't there a Joey Aguilar at Ucla this summer?"
It's like every single thing the Ucla football program has done since Martin Jarmond has become AD has been an epic mistake. It's almost like he has no clue what he's doing??? :</
They stink.

UCLA Football: A beautiful evening at the Rose Bowl spoiled.

I get their initial response.
I’d hope if they thought about it for more than 3 seconds they’d find some empathy for us.
But that’s not the way of the world these days.
They won't win a game. Last time UCLA went winless in football was 1924, so they are accomplishing one goal, they are making history 0-12.
..as a waggish reply, I fear they may even fail to achieve this goal. Oh the irony!
*DSF or The Fetus or both!
Only a Trojan could wish for such a fate!

Query: are week day football practices optional for players (and coaches)?

Even CNN had 2, 2!, posts about how bad our football program is.
Getting shamed everywhere. The heat has been turned up and it's about time as painful as it is.

Rumors are the chancellor is listening and is ready to make some changes. Stay tuned.
Done.

Go Bruins
Running the table in reverse is definitely on board.
Running the table in reverse is definitely within our grasp.
I hate being right. I said after the Utah game, and the fact that Michigan didn't easily handle New Mexico that New Mexico would blow us out.
This is the worst ICLA football team I have ever seen and I have been watching UCLA for 60 years.
There are 14 days until the next game - bye weeks are usually the time when bad or failing coaches truly turn into endangered species.
