Outstanding write up with good historical references, unfortunately there are others. Really drives home that UCLA Football is a C&C conundrum: Culture & Coaching. What a shame
I was one of the naysayers that wanted UCLA to stay far away from the failed retread that is Kelly. I was hoping with experience the players would finally gel into something special this year. There’s still time I suppose but it doesn’t look good. I mean Stanford and USC are one thing but Fresno State?!? Just no. I don’t know if this is the answer, but USC had a good idea. Rip off the bandaid now and get it over with. Sadly it appears Mr. Jarmond is going to stick with Kelly for at least this year.
Great write up Dimitri, I am impressed that you found the strength after that pathetic game to write anything at all. I was hoping beyond hope that this would be the year that Chip made everyone eat their words. With all those freshman growing up the past 3 years, and the the transfer portal’s help, I really thought we could make some headway. Who knows maybe we still can, but based on the 3 game sample size, it’s gonna be a loooong season.
Question - what qualifies as a successful season for Chip still? as it stands - he can still run the table and finish 11-1 (not saying that's likely, but still a possibility).
I agree fully that Chip is not the guy to get UCLA back to competing for Rose Bowl titles. it's been 4 years, the team is fully his, and some of the same issues persist. I'm convinced of this even if he did somehow run the table and win the Pac-12.
The defensive issues are all there. The players give 100% effort - they looked like they were fighting, and that the coaching staff failed them with their scheme. and while everyone can point to various mistakes as to how the game could have been won, the fact remains the defense looked like the defenses of the first couple years of Azz.
i think the game against Stanford will be telling, if UCLA can figure out what they need to do to start the season 3-1. Hoping they figure it out.
Nope, Chip needs to win Pac-12 anything short and it won’t be enough as far as I am concerned he has the talent to get this done if he does not it’s later chip?..
Great points, LA. It's very possible that Fresno is actually a great team - they lost to Oregon by just a TD and destroyed their 2 other opponents before they pipped us at the Rose Bowl. With that in mind, I agree the Stanford game will be very telling as to whether we are a legit good team that got our weaknesses exposed by a great QB and game plan last week or whether we are the same old underachieving and failure prone Bruin football team of the last decade.

Oh yah…..Chip, you need to send your D coordinator the door! ASAP!!
Dimitri, you and your writing are brilliant.
Granted, I don't ultimately feel any better about things, but I did temporarily enjoy experiencing my misery through the GoT lens.
Sigh. Back to the wall...

Go Bruins!
I would hope 8 wins, including a Bowl game, to keep the job.

That's just football fans in general.
UCLA fans at the moment would be like Sisyphus, doomed to watch the same bad thing happen every single time with no end in sight.
The Song Remains The Same . . .
Gonna request music from Hadestown makes it into PGG imo.
Hearts for any Zep reference
You’re gonna like PGG this week then...
I would say 8-9 wins would be successful for Chip. However based on his history at UCLA, 5 wins would be. LOL.
ugh...
