It’s taken four wins by UCLA and three by Oregon, but the Bruins finally have what can be considered a traditional 12:30 pm PT kickoff and today’s game will be broadcast nationally on CBS.
I’ve been writing a lot about how Coach Bob Chesney has been the cure for Battered Bruin Syndrome. Well, BBS says that this is exactly the type of game where UCLA would be embarrassed by losing badly in nationally televised game.
But BBS has been cured.
That doesn’t mean UCLA has to win today, though a Bruin win would do wonders for the program as well as the team’s ranking. They just have to be competitive and not get embarrassed, and I’m confident that will happen this afternoon. You should be too.
Oregon will be debuting their new black “Origin of Speed” uniforms today and they are blacking out Autzen Stadium. I think they were expecting today’s game to be played at night where the black out might have a bigger effect, but UCLA didn’t cooperate and the game will kickoff at 12:30 pm PT. And, if they want to talk about the “origin of speed,” the Bruins should remind them how the UCLA stripe was created by Red Sanders to display the impression of motion because, without motion, there is no speed.
Keys to the Game
1. On Your Mark, Get Set…
GO! When JMU played Oregon in Autzen last December, the Ducks took advantage of a fast start and the Dukes couldn’t catch up. If the Bruins can get off to a fast start today, Oregon may not be able to catch them.
2. Pound the Rock
The Bruin rushing attack should match up well against Oregon’s nickel defense. Look for the Bruins to keep the ball on the ground as much as possible,
3. Win the Turnover Battle
The Bruins need to win the turnover battle. UCLA has been excellent when it comes to taking the ball away. The problem is that no Oregon quarterback has thrown an interception yet this season, but then again, neither had Malik Washington before he played against UCLA.
