UCLA Bruins at #2 Indiana Hoosiers Game Thread
UCLA looks to knock off their second Top Ten opponent in a month.

Three weeks ago, I don’t think anyone thought we could beat Penn State. Of course, that was before the Bruins exposed them as paper lions. Prior to that game, the feeling was that the big point spread wasn’t big enough.
And then, they played the game and suddenly, everything changed.
Yet, here we are three weeks later, and the Bruins are big underdogs again.
Now, the difference may very well be the fact that the Hoosiers are the real deal compared to the Nittany Lions, but the fact is that Penn State was seen as one of the best teams in the country until we beat them.
Can the Bruins pull off their second upset of a Top Ten team in the Tim Skipper era? Let’s look at what they need to do to accomplish that by looking at the keys to the game.
Keys to the Game
1. Stop the Hoosier Running Game
Indiana likes to run the ball nearly 60% of the time. They average 5.5 yards per carry when they do run the ball. When a team runs the ball that much, it ends up in drives which can eat a lot of clock. When a team gains that many yards per carry, it results in a lot of first downs. If the Bruins can stop the run, they will stay out a lot of third and short situations where the Hoosiers can easily pick up a first down. That will go a long way towards the second key, which is…
2. Get the Defense Off the Field
The UCLA defense has been playing very well. They have done an excellent job over the past two games at keeping opposing offenses out of the end zone. The defense needs to get off the field in order to put the ball into the hands of the Bruin offense. But, more importantly, getting the defense off the field keeps Fernando Mendoza and the Hoosiers from scoring touchdowns, which is something no team has been able to do enough this year, not even the Oregon Ducks.
3. Put the Ball in the End Zone
Field goals are great. They can win football games like we saw at the end of last week’s game against Maryland, but relying on them too much is a recipe for losing. Kicking field goals on each possession is not going to cut it today. The Bruins need to score touchdowns. In order for UCLA to win this morning, they must put the ball into the end zone more than Indiana does. If they are able to do that, they will win today.

UCLA lost this game two years ago when they refused to fire Chip Kelly. I think that’s the long and short of it.
That said, I again think this puts a nail in the idea that Tim Skipper deserves a legitimate chance at this job (and that Jerry deserves to be UCLA OC next year). It’s one thing to change a broken culture by being positive, but against a good coaching staff they’re getting their lunch taken.
UCLA is playing real coaching staff for the first time since the winning streak started and it shows.
Cignetti and his staff clearly drilled the possibility of a fake into their players, and that had no chance.
