UCLA Beach Volleyball Stays Alive with Sweep of Cal Poly; Faces LSU Next
The Bruins will now face the LSU Tigers at 3:30 pm PT.
The Bruins swept Cal Poly in Dual #10 this afternoon at the NCAA Beach Volleyball Championship and, now, UCLA advances to Dual #12 against LSU this afternoon at 3:30 pm PT. The Bruins are now two wins away from playing for the right to defend their back-to-back titles.
Against Cal Poly, the outcome was never in doubt. UCLA took the first set on all five courts, leaving the Bruins needing to win just three more sets to advance in the tournament.
UCLA got the first of those three set wins on Court Four where Megan Muret and Jacqueline Quade completed their sweep of Sam Strah and Eleonore Johansen, 21-16, 21-19.
The Bruins’ second point came on Court Two where Lea Monkhouse and Devon Newberry swept Amy Ozee and Jayelin Lombard, 22-20, 21-17. That left UCLA needing to win just one of the three remaining pairs.
That win came on Court Five where Rileigh Powers and Jaden Whitmarsh defeated Vanessa Roscoe and Josie Ulrich, 21-19, 21-19, to complete the sweep and end the dual.
At the point where play was stopped, Abby Van Winkle and Lindsey Sparks were close to earning a point for UCLA on Court Three, too. They were up 21-19, 17-15 over Tia Maric and Mariah Whalen. Over on Court One, Savvy Simo and Lexy Denaburg had won their first set, 23-21 and they were tied with Emily Sonny and Macy Gordon.
LSU Tigers
The Bruins won both of their matches against LSU a month ago, but those matches were in Westwood. Today’s isn’t. In fact, LSU has a much bigger contingent of fans at the tournament due to the fact that Gulf Shores, Alabama is closer to LSU than UCLA.
LSU hadn’t beaten Florida State in a while before today either. So, I’m expecting this match to be a tough one. In fact, I think it will likely come down to the final court, but I still see the Bruins advancing to Championship Sunday.
