After opening the season with a pair of doubleheaders, the UCLA women’s volleyball team hosts the UC Berkeley Golden Bears this afternoon for just one match. The start time for today’s match is 1:30 pm and all three courts will be streamed.

Last Time Out

On Thursday, the Bruins traveled across town for a doubleheader against Cal Poly and Southern Cal. The first match turned out well as UCLA swept the Mustangs, 5-0, but the second one didn’t go as well due to the fact that the Bruins were swept by the Trojans, 5-0.

Against Cal Poly, all five Bruin pairs won in straight sets. Rileigh Powers and Jaden Whitmarsh won the first pairing on Court 5 over Piper Naess and Delaney Peranich, 21-17, 21-12. Lea Monkhouse and Cami Sanchez finished their pairing next over on Court 4 by beating Vanessa Roscoe and Josie Ulrich, 21-15, 21-19. The pair of Devon Newberry and Lindsey Sparks clinched the match for UCLA when they beat Jayelin Lombard and Amy Ozee on Court 2, 21-17, 21-13. Lexy Denaburg and Savvy Simo set the Bruins up for a possible sweep when they topped Macy Gordon and Emily Sonny, 21-17, 21-15. Megan Muret and Jacqueline Quade completed the sweep by defeating Eleonore Johansen and Tia Miric, 21-19, 21-16.

However you might describe the match against Cal Poly, the second match of the day against Southern Cal was the exact opposite as UCLA was swept by the Trojans. The domination began with Audrey Nourse and Nicole Nourse beating Powers and Whitmarsh on Court 5, 21-16, 21-18. Court 4 followed with Joy Dennis and Delaynie Maple needing three sets to beat Monkhouse and Sanchez, 19-21, 21-16, 15-10. Haley Hallgren and Megan Kraft sealed the win for the Trojans by defeating Muret and Quade on Court 3 next, winning 21-10, 21-17. Adding insult to injury, Hailey Harward and Julia Scoles followed by beating Newberry and Sparks, 21-11, 21-14. Then, finally, Tina Graudina and Sammy Slater completed the sweep with a win over Denaburg and Simo, 21-11, 22-24, 15-10.

#8 UC Berkeley Golden Bears

The UC Berkeley Golden Bears make their way to Los Angeles this afternoon. Last weekend, the Bears won a pair of matches against Oregon and UC Davis on Friday and Saturday. UC Berkeley swept both teams. The wins moved the Bears up from 9th to 8th in this week’s Top 20 poll.

I fully expect the Bruins to get back to their winning ways today after being swept by the Trojans on Thursday and I won’t be surprised if UCLA sweeps UC Berkeley.

UCLA Will Need To Move Forward Without Jaylen Clark
The forward's status for the rest of the season is still in doubt, but the Bruins have faced adversity before.
