#4 UCLA Beach Volleyball to Face UC Berkeley and Arizona State in Pac-12 South Invitational
The Bruins swept a doubleheader against Pepperdine on Thursday.
The #4 UCLA beach volleyball team has won five straight matches including a win over UC Berkeley and four over Pepperdine. Today, the Bruins will be on the road in Tucson, Arizona for the Pac-12 South Invitational. UCLA will play two matches today. First up will be the UC Berkeley Golden Bears at 9 am. Then later on, they will take on the Arizona State Sun Devils.
Last Time Out
On Thursday, UCLA took on Pepperdine in a doubleheader at Zuma Beach and swept the Waves, 4-1 and 5-0.
The only Bruin pair to lose on Thursday came in the first match when Carly Skjodt and Brook Bauer defeated Abby Van Winkle and Lea Monkhouse, 17-21, 21-19, 18-16.
The two sets Van Winkle and Monkhouse lost were the only two sets UCLA lost in the first match. Meanwhile, in the second match, Van Winkle and Monkhouse lost one of their three sets to Skjodt and Bauer and that was the only set the Bruins lost in the second match when they swept the Waves, 5-0.
UC Berkeley Golden Bears
Since the Golden Bears lost to UCLA on Saturday, March 6, they have gone 3-1. They picked up wins over Concordia, UC Davis and Hawai’i and dropped their match against Loyola Marymount.
I expect another Bruin win against the Golden Bears today, even if UCLA doesn’t shut the Bears out like they did three weeks ago at home.
Arizona State Sun Devils
The Sun Devils had an almost three-week layoff after they took two of three matches at the Cactus Classic. On Thursday, they faced #8 Grand Canyon University and #18 Stanford and they lost both matches by a score of 4-1 in each. So, it appears that the layoff left them rusty, but the Sun Devils aren’t ranked and they’ve now lost the only three matches they’ve played against ranked teams this season. They also lost to GCU on February 26.
Their three wins haven’t exactly set the world on fire either. So far, they’ve defeated Colorado Mesa, Stephen F. Austin and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi while their fourth loss came against an unranked Boise State Squad.
Look for the Bruins to shut out the Sun Devils.
