UCLA Beach Volleyball Looks for Weekend Sweep at Pac-12 South Invitational
The Bruins swept both of their matches yesterday when they faced UC Berkeley and Arizona State.

Yesterday, the UCLA beach volleyball team swept both of their matches to increase their winning streak to seven matches. This morning, the Bruins will play one more match at the Pac-12 South Invitational. Today’s opponent will be the Oregon Ducks and the match is scheduled to begin at 10:15 am PT and will be broadcast on either Pac-12 Network Bay Area.
Last Time Out
The Bruins kept their winning streak going yesterday by defeating both UC Berkeley and Arizona State. The Bruins swept both matches 5-0.
Against UC Berkeley, the Court One pair of Savvy Simo and Lexy Denaburg were the first pair to dispatch their opponents Ainsley Radell and Jordan Polo, 21-13, 21-12. Devon Newberry and Lindsey Sparks finished second, defeating Alexia Inman and Maddie Micheletti, 21-15, 21-12. Megan Muret and Jacqueline Quade clinched the match for the Bruins by beating Katie Smoot and Brooke Buchner, 21-15, 21-16.
All five matches were played to completion and the remaining two duals also went to UCLA. Rileigh Powers and Jaden Whitmarsh beat Francesca Gettings and Grace Paulson, 21-12, 21-15. Abby Van Winkle and Lea Monkhouse were the final pair to finish. They needed 22 points to defeat Caroline Schafer and Mima Mirkovic in their second set and won their match, 21-18, 22-20.
Later on, UCLA also swept Arizona State, 5-0. Like the UC Berkeley match, no dual went to a third set. Devon Newberry and Lindsey Sparks were the first pair to finish when they defeated Cierra Flood and Sarah Waters, 21-12, 21-15. Abby Van Winkle and Lea Monkhouse wrapped up next by beating Emily Anderson and Aleksandra Sochacka, 21-7, 21-10. The clincher in this one came on Court One when Lexy Denaburg and Savvy Simo finished off Katelyn Carballo and Lexi Sweeney, 21-17, 21-16. Over on Court Four, Megan Muret and Jacqueline Quade needed extra points in their second set to top Kate Fitzgerald and Taryn Ames, 21-9, 24-22. UCLA’s final dual pair of the day was Rileigh Powers and Jaden Whitmarsh, who finished the match by dispatching Lila Bordis and Samantha Plaster, 21-9, 21-15.
Oregon Ducks
The Oregon Ducks beach volleyball (2-5) has struggled so far this season. Their only two wins of the season have come against Corban University, an NAIA school located in Salem, Oregon.
The Ducks opened the season by being swept by UC Berkeley and St. Mary’s. Yesterday, they were swept again by both Southern Cal and Arizona. That trend continued again this morning when Oregon was swept by UC Berkeley again.
Given those results, it would be shocking if the Ducks win a set, much less a dual against the Bruins this morning.
