UCLA Baseball Opens the LA Regional Against Fresno State
The Bruins are hosting an NCAA Regional for the first time since 2019.

Let’s start with the good news. UCLA baseball is hosting an NCAA baseball regional for the first time since 2019 when they play Fresno State this afternoon.
But, with the Yankees in town to play the Dodgers this weekend, don’t be surprised if the American League MVP shows up to try to boost the fortunes of his old college team.
The Bruins will open this weekend’s regional with a game against Judge’s Fresno State Bulldogs. Of course, the better news is that Fresno State head coach Ryan Overland will not be able to sneak big #99 into his lineup against the Bruins.
Oh, to be a fly on the wall of the Yankee clubhouse right now with Judge’s Bulldogs taking on Gerrit Cole’s Bruins!
Last Time Out
On Sunday, the Bruins just disappointed in the Big Ten Championship Game, losing the game to Nebraska, 5-0, in front of the more than 15,000 Cornhusker fans who turned out to Charles Schwab Field in Omaha, Nebraska for the game.
In the second inning, the Huskers put up a three-spot. The inning began when UCLA’s starter Landon Stump hit Gabe Swansen with a pitch. With Case Sanderson at the dish, Swansen moved up to second on a wild pitch. When Sanderson singled to left, Swansen advanced to third. That set things up for Dylan Carey who doubled down the right field line, scoring Swansen. Sanderson scored from third on a passed ball to make it, 2-0, and Casey scored on a single through the right side by Rhett Stokes, giving Nebraska a 3-0 lead.
The Huskers added a pair of insurance runs in the fifth on a two-run homer by Devin Nunez.
Meanwhile, the Bruin offense struggled, leaving seven men on base throughout the rest of the game while plating no one.
At the very least, hopefully, UCLA will be able to use their experience at the Big Ten Tournament in Omaha as a way to become familiar with Schwab Field because that’s where the CWS is played.
Before that, though, they need to win the LA Regional this weekend.
