The UCLA baseball team bounced back from their Friday loss to Florida State by crushing the Southeastern Louisiana Lions by a score of 16-2. The loss by the Lions eliminated them and the Bruins will face Florida State again today in another elimination game at 11 am PT. The Seminoles lost to regional hosts Auburn Tigers last night by the score of 21-7.

The winner of today’s UCLA-FSU game will play again at 4 pm PT against Auburn. Should the Tigers lose that game, the same two teams will play a winner-take-all contest on Monday.

Last Time Out

Yesterday’s game was over before Southeastern Louisiana even got to bat. That’s because the Bruins scored three runs in the top of the first. Bruin shortstop Cody Schrier led off the game with a double to left field. Following a walk to Jake Palmer and a fielder’s choice by Michael Curialle, UCLA had runners on the corners with one out. A double by Ethan Gorson scored Schrier and brought Kyle Karros to the dish with runners on second and third. When Karros reached on a throwing error by Lions starting pitcher Andrew Landry, both Curialle and Gorson scored to give the Bruins a quick 3-0 lead.

While the Lions scored a run in the bottom of the second to cut UCLA’s lead to 3-1, the Bruins retaliated by scoring 13 consecutive runs and, after eight innings, UCLA led 16-1.

UCLA freshman Nate Liebold pitched the ninth inning and, while he gave up SE Louisiana’s other run, this one wasn’t in doubt.

Jake Saum earned his fourth win of the season by pitching a scoreless fifth.

Outlook

UCLA needs two wins today to force a seventh game tomorrow. First, the Bruins need to get past the Florida State Seminoles, who beat UCLA on Friday, 5-3. If they can do that, they will need to face a rested Auburn team that’s in the catbird’s seat and they will likely need to do so using either their midweek starter Daniel Colwell or the bullpen.

It will be a tough task to win twice today.

I was hoping that game would wake up our offense, but we’re tied 1-1 with FSU in the top of the 8th. Go Bruins!
