After dropping the opening game of this weekend’s series to Stanford, the Bruins will look to even things up today when Jesse Bergin (3-1, 3.03 ERA) takes the hill for UCLA against sophomore southpaw Quinn Mathews (3-0, 3.19 ERA). The Bruins lost last night’s game, 6-2, as they just couldn’t generate enough runs.

Last Time Out

Matt McLain got things started in a positive direction for the Bruins with a solo homer in the top of the first. That was the only run either team would score until the fifth inning.

In the bottom of the fifth, the Cardinal got a two-run home run and an RBI double to take a 3-1 lead. Stanford added to that in the seventh when UCLA starter Jake Pettway gave up another two-run homer, putting the Cardinal up, 5-1.

The Bruins mounted a rally in the eighth with doubles from Kyle Karros and Kevin Kendall. McLain hit an RBI single to right which scored Karros and gave the Bruins two runners on with just one out. But UCLA couldn’t muster any more runs and they ended up with a breadstick instead of a crooked number. That was the Bruins’ last serious scoring threat in this one.

Stanford added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth which gave them a 6-2 final.

Pettway took the loss for the Bruins, his second of the season and he is still looking for his elusive first win.

Today’s game looks to be a great matchup between Bergin and Mathews. Both pitchers have similar win-loss records and ERAs. Can the Bruins wake up their bats to even the series. We can only hope.

This baseball team is looking suspiciously like the men’s soccer program under Jorge.... Great recruiting classes every year with a pre-season Top 10 and very often Top 5 ranking and then getting hammered during the seaso. by all comers....not good.
