The Mighty Bruin Is Looking for Team Members
Do you bleed blue and gold? If you’re a UCLA fan, student or alum, then TMB may have a writing spot for you!
Do you love the Four Letters? Are you the biggest Bruin fan on earth (or at least, maybe, your neighborhood)?
Have you ever wished you could write about UCLA sports on a regular basis?
With our five-year anniversary up on Friday, I want to thank everyone who reads this site, and I want to especially thank everyone who has stepped up with a subscription. Our readers and subscribers make this site possible.
It’s hard to believe that TMB has been around for a five years already. It feels like only yesterday that we found out that we would have our contracts for our old site cancelled and we embarked on the journey to establish The Mighty Bruin.
Then, just as we were getting ready to actually launch TMB, the pandemic hit, and all remaining games for the Spring sports season (aka Championship Season) came to a halt.
But, win or lose…pandemic or not, our mission has always been the same: deliver the best UCLA coverage possible in a professional manner but also in a way that is true to what makes our site unique. Every contributor of TMB needs to be a fan first, above all else.
Now, don’t get me wrong. Dimitri and I always do our best to deliver the best coverage possible, but it is our belief that the site is at its best when we have multiple contributors in the mix, which creates a greater depth of opinions, views and takes on what we all come here for in the first place: UCLA sports. The more contributors we have, the more passion the site is generating out to the fan base and the community we’ve established here. It also means we can physically cover a greater bredth of UCLA sports with our coverage too.
With that purpose and goal in mind, it feels like the perfect time to grow our team. If you’ve been with us since the beginning, you know we prefer to cover as many UCLA sports and related news as possible.
But it’s been especially difficult with just the two of us and we’ve had to scale back our coverage just because we haven’t had enough people on the team to allow us to cover the full breadth of Bruin sports.
In order to do that, we really need more people contributing on a regular basis.
The primary requirement is simple: a passion bucket full for all things related to the Four Letters.
Being a passionate Bruin fan is the most important quality that will be evident above all else in your writing for the site. It’s what makes what we do here special.
If you have previous writing experience, that’s always a plus, but it’s not a requirement.
A willingness to take direction and constructive feedback is also important.
While football is always our main priority for coverage in the fall and men’s basketball is the focus in the winter, you don’t have to want to write about either of them if you’re willing to write about other sports instead. At a minimum, there are opportunities to be involved in covering those teams you are interested in writing about, though an interest in football or basketball would help free up either Dimitri or myself to write about other sports.
As managing editor, I’m always open to new ideas, new approaches and new ways to connect with the rest of the Bruin fan base. If you like TMB, tell me how we can make it better.
Being critical after losses with well-argued, fact-based articles has always been part of our coverage. Hot takes with little substance are not.
Anyone interested should send a writing sample on anything focused on UCLA sports to me directly at joe@themightybruin.com. If you do have writing experience, please also send me a previously published article or links to review. If you don’t have any experience, pick whatever UCLA topic you are interested in and write about it. Pitch me your first article. We may even publish it!
If you still aren’t sure that you want to apply or aren’t comfortable doing so, keep in mind that I had zero experience before becoming a contributor to our previous site. Soon after, I took the lead there with gBruin. If I can learn along the way, you can too.
Thanks again to all of you who are readers of The Mighty Bruin. If you aren’t interested or don’t have the time to be a contributor, but you have ideas for how we can better serve the fan base, please don’t hesitate to contact me directly as well.
This next year is going to be as exciting as any in recent memory for UCLA athletics. If you want to be part of how it will be remembered and celebrated among the fan base, now is your chance to do it.
Go Bruins!!!
