For most of David Shaw’s tenure with the Cardinal, the Bruins have been Stanford’s punching bag. But Chip Kelly broke that 11-game streak with last year’s win over the Cardinal. Now, the Bruins will look to win their second straight over Shaw’s team.
This looks to be another close game and, frankly, that should scare the crap out of Bruin fans after last weekend’s defeat against Southern Cal which was snatched from the jaws of victory by poor special teams play and bad coaching decisions.
Game Time Weather Forecast
It will be a be another Chamber of Commerce day and night today in Pasadena. It will be sunny and the temperature will be about 68° degrees at kickoff. Sunset will occur at 4:46 pm, right about the end of the first quarter.
It will cool off a little as the game progresses. The temperature should be about 63° around halftime and will drop to around 60° or possibly the upper 50s by the end of the game.
The Mighty Bruin Zoom Party
We are also excited to announce that we will try something new today for the Stanford game. We will be continuing our first The Mighty Bruin Zoom Party! We kicked it off during the basketball game against Ohio State and we’re going to keep it going during this evening’s football game. So, if you’re watching the game and want to virtually meet up with some fellow Bruin fans, join our Zoom meeting! Here are the deets:
The TuneIn player won’t embed here on Substack, but you can open another tab to listen to Josh Lewin and Matt Stevens call this morning’s game rather than having to listen to the insufferable Beth Mowins, analyst Kirk Morrison and sideline reporter Tyler McGregor. So, be sure to right-click on it so that you can open up another tab and have it going while you chat in the comments below. Listen to today’s game online.

This is your Stanford Cardinal at UCLA Bruins game thread.
You brought up a great point in the recruiting thread the other day, Army,...do we need better talent or better in-game decisions? It would be nice to get both, but since that doesn't seem to be an option for us with any of our coaches, ever, and we don't get any better off by only getting one side of the equation, how do we ever get out of this annual morass of mediocrity?
Well, we have Fernea running the ball today. I think we closed this year in recruiting well. Rankings can be misleading, because lineman are often 3 stars that develop. Wondering about the D today.
Yeah, recruiting stars represent today reasonably well but don't necessarily relate to future earnings for sure, and our players have developed better under Kelly's staff than they ever did with Mora's. It would just be nice to bring in a lot of really promising kids and watch them get better every year so they they are difference makers as juniors and seniors. Without more of that, we're always going to be scrambling in the middle of the pack (pac)
I posted an article on Bruin Nation about 5 years ago titled "Embrace the Mediocrity". I went back to my first year at UCLA. Looks like I can add another chapter.
The last line was...Is Coach Mora (Coach Kelly) the right person to lead to the next level? It is clear to most of us what needs to be done. Can he and will he make it happen? Time will tell. If not be prepared for another decade of mediocrity.
Yup, but if last year didn't merit any changes, do you think Chip lets Azz go after this year? He'll point to some occasional improvements (probably more from Norwood) and give him another f***ing raise.
And Sam Darnold joins the list of recent average $c quarterbacks (Sanchez, Leinart, Booty, Barkley) who excelled behind a pro-ready O Line throwing to pro-ready WRs in college, only to get exposed in the NFL.
less than average, actually.. the most successful SUC QB was Carson Palmer when her played for Cardinals. otherwise, you have butt fumbles, hot tubs with high school coeds.... the list goes on...
Does anyone care about the CFP? I was very pleased to see ND get smashed by Clemson, but they precious Irish will probably still get gifted an invite. Same with tOSU who cheated their way in and squeezed by a decent but not great Northwestern team. I would love to see Cincy and Coastal Carolina get a shot but that won't make enough money for the networks, so I figure we'll get 4 of the usual 5 or 6 suspects, and so my interest is a lot less.
Da fuq I'm watching MMA on ESPN for??
Just found in on the Deuce
Our Saturday TMB Zoom party continues! Come join us!
I am in our family tailgate zoom. Can you multi Zoom?
apparently not
Oh crap, Felton not playing!!
Missed that. Injury?
Senior bowl
Gotcha. Thx
Plus this is a rather meaningless game, in the long run... why risk injury?
Great block by the ref!!
DTR Regressing
Go Bruins! Denver is getting boat raced so I have the TV back.
Hockey game over too?
No. 2-0 lead half way through. Streaming on You Tube.
We're still giving up HUGE cushions on D
Going to miss Felton.
Makes a big difference on our O
Could even use Kazmeir Allen.
Just like Kelley last year. Who steps up next year
So where was that option play last week??
Don't mention last week. Too soon. ;-)
Great protection by the O line last play, giving lotsa time to DTR to find open man
Riding with DTR today. Offense lacks speed.
So far that's enough :-)
Not sure this is true of Griffin, however -_-
Touchdown!!!
Aw crap
Flag on that TD run by Fernea :-(
The referee’s fingers. 😳
Still a problem with the missed tackles!
Geez. This is looking like every Stanford game ever.
I was just thinking the same. Just like Jim Mora has returned.

Our D has yet to show up
And that leads me to ask about the team's motives for already declining a bowl game. Are the kids just through with this year already?
They've checked out. Just like their coach.
Get rid of Chip Kelly now. The team looks unprepared and uninspired.
That would be our best half time adjustment all season.
I'm okay with the O so far (except the holding penalties) but seriously, WTF is up with our D? Receivers wide open, little pressure on QB
#Azzinaro
#FireAzzinaro!! (2 years ago!)
Norwood went to the Bathroom
And DTR with a couple nice decisions and throws.
It's just a consistency thing...
Special Teams showed up
Stupid decision by the kick receiver-- love it!
Oh what could have been...
We're butter tonight.
This is painful to watch
Looks like we are playing short handed today.
Who we missing besides Felton?
Wondering who we are missing on D. Calvert was mentioned snd we are clearly getting gapped.
I posted an article on Bruin Nation about 5 years ago titled "Embrace the Mediocrity". I went back to my first year at UCLA. Looks like I can add another chapter.
Besides the names, has anything changed?
The last line was...Is Coach Mora (Coach Kelly) the right person to lead to the next level? It is clear to most of us what needs to be done. Can he and will he make it happen? Time will tell. If not be prepared for another decade of mediocrity.
Prescient post!
The only difference was there was an uptick with each coach. no uptick with Coach Kelly
Punting from our 33?? Really?
We will miss Felton next year, but I really like Brown a lot.
If he stays.
That doesn’t look good.
FUUUCCCKKK!! DTR being helped off the field
Oh that right ankle...
stuffed.
Hope DTR is ok.
Sigh. A hundred sighs.
For a team that’s been on the road for 19 days Stanford looks a lot more motivated.
Good to see you, 281! You haven't been over here much, have you?
I’ve been watching but not posting. Been a strange year with some family health issues to attend to on top of everything else.
Oh geez. Well, I'm glad you're here and I hope things get better for you and the family soon.
Looks like I can free up space on my DVR.
Good to see DTR walking on the sideline.
Let's not rush him back for a meaningless game, though... want him around one more year, if possible
Totally agree.
OUCH! they just trucked Knight!
Looked like offensive targeting to me.
Well, 30 minutes for Chip to show if the team really turned around in 2020 or not.
Can we decline an invite to the second half?
LOLOL
Half: Stanford 20 - U.C.L.A. 3
And it isn't that close.
Looks like teams may boycott the Rose Bowl
The only positive I can take from this game is that it exposes how badly inconsistent our D is, and puts focus on how fuckin' bad Azz is
Yup, but if last year didn't merit any changes, do you think Chip lets Azz go after this year? He'll point to some occasional improvements (probably more from Norwood) and give him another f***ing raise.
Trevor Lawrence to the Jets
Poor Trevor!!
And Sam Darnold joins the list of recent average $c quarterbacks (Sanchez, Leinart, Booty, Barkley) who excelled behind a pro-ready O Line throwing to pro-ready WRs in college, only to get exposed in the NFL.

Think they will move the Rose Bowl?
Ye$
Wow Jimbo Fisher made Texas A&M relevant in 2 years heavy sigh
Did you guys see the hit on that Gator? I'm still sore just from watching it!
BTW I will never root for a Gator to win anything...
