Gib, I don't mean to speak for you, but I think that you and I were the only people on this site and in all of Bruinland who did not favor Chipster's hire, where success is his riding the coattails of Bellotti and Vick.

Chip is actually a very smart offensive guy. His problem is what Bruin Gold posted below — recruiting.

For the life of me I can’t understand how a guy who prides developing players doesn’t get that recruiting top end talent would make his job infinitely easier.

His aversion to recruiting was a known commodity from the outset, which should have immediately eliminated him from consideration.

in the transfer portal era, i think we need to stop looking at recruiting rankings. To be sure, Chip's recruiting sucks. But 61 is misleading if he plucks multiple starters out of the transfer portal (Clemson's starting QB is rumored to be considering UCLA).

DJU?! I know he was strong at Bosco but his "performance" at Clemson makes DTR look like Drew Brees!

not saying he's an NFL prospect, but he is certainly a serviceable QB and probably better than that in the pac 12.

He was at the top school in the only Power 5 conference ranked worse than the Pac-12 by advanced metrics. I seriously doubt he would get it done with a conference that has Washington and USC taking steps forward, with Arizona coming off the mat in year 3. That’s 7 in conference teams with better talent and coaching than what DJ faced in the ACC.

Again, he's serviceable and probably better. Certainly better than anything on the roster right now. As for UW and USC, give me a break. Penix is gone. USC would have been VERY mediocre this year without the likely Heisman winner.

That Heisman winner will be at SC for another year with second year five star players like Korey Foreman, and even if Penix leaves they have Brock Huard’s nephew waiting in the wings. I don’t expect any drop off.

gonna be some major growing pains if they hand it over to Huard.

Honestly not trying to get into a fight here but if you watched the two series DJU played in the ACC Championship game before he was pulled (and Klubnik showed what that offense could have been) - he looks like he has lost all confidence and would have to be rebuilt to get to "serviceable". For all his other faults, maybe Chip could be that "QB Whisperer" that could fix him, but that dude is broken right now...

Clio 98's avatar

I get that he was highly rated coming out of high school and all, and perhaps he'd thrive in Chip's offense, but based on what he's *actually* done on the field this season - not one single game with over 233 yds passing in regulation (he did throw for 300+ in a double OT game), benched multiple times, and coming off an 8-for-29 for 99 yards 1 TD/1pick performance in a game that could have put his team in the CFP on a roster full of 5*s and a playoff level defense, I think we'd have to agree to disagree...

Seriously. You think someone who is 60th + in recruiting is going to do anything of substance in the portal? You think UCLA will have more NIL money than other competing schools? No, if Kelly can't recruit Freshman who usually don' know what they are getting into, he won't be recruiting sophomores or juniors who know exactly who Kelly is and exactly what they are getting into. It doesn't matter if you are recruiting out of high school or "recruiting" players in the portal, it's still recruiting. In fact, I'd argue that "recruiting" in the portal will be more difficult because the kids have grown in intelligence and can see a losing program much clearer than that out of high school.

well, the proof is in the pudding. We had one of the best transfer portal classes in the nation last year.

Yea and they ended up in 6th place in their own league. Proof is in the pudding. You know absolutely nothing about recruiting. ZERO. Maybe you and Chip can join forces! lol

You are just a contrarian troll. You refuse to look at facts. You falsely claimed that "Kelly has done literally nothing in the portal." When I demonstrated exactly what he has done in the portal, irrespective of his failures elsewhere, you pivoted to the team's 5th place (not 6th) finish.

BigB88's avatar

Oh, okay, I guess I refused to look at all these facts.

UCLA has 27 seniors; essentially making them a senior laden team, and they still couldn't beat Arizona at home.

UCLA had 8 homes games in which two out of their 3 losses were at home, one to an Arizona team that was 3-6 overall at the time

UCLA has one of the worst recruiting ratings over the past 5 years;

2018 20th (Inherited from Mora Jr.)

2019 30th

2020 32nd

2021 40th

2022 61st

UCLA had the 92nd hardest schedule out of 131 schools this season and still could only barely scratch out 9 wins with 8 home games! All their toughest games were at home except for their only other loss to Oregon in Eugene where they were dominated. Utah & Washington were home games, otherwise they definitely would have lost both of those games.

But of course, this is all "Pivoting", after all Chip did win 9 games with one of the easiest schedules of any FBS school, what an achievement! So go ahead, keep defending Kelly, when he goes 5-7 or maybe even 4-8 next season, you will still be on here defending him. Good Luck.

Again, this has nothing to do with your false claim about Chip's transfer portal successes. You can argue that he is a terrible recruiter and mediocre coach while simultaneously acknowledging he has taken advantage of the transfer portal better than almost every coach in the country. The only coach to have done a better job was Lincoln Riley and he's got a Heisman QB as a result and on the inside track to the CFP.

Again, you are missing the point. Recruiting is 70% of building a successful athletic program whether it be football or basketball or any of the other non-revenue sports. Kelly HAS NOT built a successful program at UCLA. You can claim he did a fantastic job with the portal, but I look at results on the field only. You can tout individual stats of the players Kelly has, but the only stat anyone ever looks at is the final score and your won-loss record. As far as Kelly's so-called portal "success", again it has to reflect on Wins and losses on the field and how successful a season you have. There is no doubt that with even a decent program and coaching staff, this team should have gone 11-1. Instead, it's a middle of the pack finish and a toilet bowl to end the season, not very successful given all the seniors and the "great" transfer portal players Kelly had. If he had great success in recruiting or in the transfer portal and was at least an average coach who takes advantage of such talent, they'd be much better than 9-3 and would have not lost to a team like Arizona.

I suppose the Powers That Be figured that after retreads Slick Rick and Jimbo, the third time's the charm. (OK, that was mean and uncalled for. I'll probably delete.)

I'm not defending the Chip hire, but in fairness to the administration, what are the choices when hiring a football coach at UCLA? It's either an experienced coach without a job (i.e. retread) or an unproven "up and comer." The unproven up and comers fail just as often as the retreads. We don't have the money or prestige to hire away a great coach from another Power 5. So it's one of those two. We could have gone after guys like Tom Herman and Scott Frost at one point, but they did not exactly pan out at the schools that won those sweepstakes. The bottom line is it is very tough, especially at UCLA, to get it right when hiring a football coach.
