I've said it before and I'll say it again: There was a huge revolt of the boosters at Cal last year, to the point where they literally said the financial spigot was off. They literally demanded that the AD be replaced and a GM be hired (they had no beef with Wilcox) who would report directly to the Chancellor not the AD. No exceptions. The AD was replaced and Ron Rivera was hired. It CAN be done. Oh and we need to get rid of Calimony.
This guy (Jelly 2.0) should have never been hired for this position, he was unqualified then and he's unqualified now. But it appears it's a historical practice of UCLA Athletics foe hiring people totally unqualified for the job. The only way this guy goes is if other sports begin to falter and I think most have already seen this. The entire Athletic direction continues to go down, how far it can fall depends on Frenk and I don't think he is inclined to make a change at the AD helm until the complete bottom falls out, as of course it already has.
Jarmond was qualified when he was hired - he was the athletic director at Boston College prior and worked in the athletic department of Ohio State. By almost any metric, he was more qualified than the last few ADs who have been hired by UCLA.
The problem is more that UCLA as an institution moves slowly and loves to insulate administrative types from the results of their actions. At most other schools, the collapse of football like we're seeing right now would have resulted in the AD being fired as well. At UCLA, it's going to require a months-long campaign to get the admin to even consider making a switch.
I stand by what I said. DeShawn Foster is an inexplicably lazy hire by Jarmond, his qualification and experience notwithstanding. With two more months remaining, UCLA football is reminiscent of a metastasizing malignancy, excruciatingly painful to endure. Nothing is available to stop the steady progress towards its infamous end. By then, I hope something redeeming arises from the smoldering ruins.
Respectful of your assertion that Jarmond was qualified - you and Joe are much closer to the UCLA athletic department goings on than I - one must agree that he has not demonstrated any semblance of competence in carrying out his role as AD.
That said, one does get the feeling that there is substantial bureaucratic intransigence over on the academic side of the house. However, I agree with my good friend and fellow Bruin, Henry Tse, who characterizes UCLA athletics as being fully engulfed in a massive dumpster fire fanned by Jarmond's perfunctory resolutions to major long term situations.
He may have come to UCLA with the requisite experience, but none of his actions to date exhibit that he has applied that expertise.
Further, his flippant, ham-handed "read the room" remark was tone deaf, very disrespectful, and certainly not endearing.
Oh, and by the way, I went over to the "X" cited in Joe's post -- the one of the truck driving around the campus with the "Fire Jarmond" all over it -- and saw this response:
Well Dimitri, we will simply have to agree to disagree here. I judge people in their job positions by what they do in that job. Not what they did or have done previously. It's obvious that what this clown of an AD has done in this specific job illustrates all that is needed to prove beyond any doubt he isn't AND WASN'T qualified for this job, period.
Not sure exactly when it happened, but the Rosebowl just wasn't a fun place to go to. No cheering except at the beginning of each half. Yet all sorts of scoreboard crap to busy the crowd. Bring back the alumni Spirit section! Every man, woman , and child! And get rid of the death bell gong on third down.
Went to the Northwestern game. At warm-ups and the start of the game it was obvious the team had no energy.
Mora wanted to "professionalize" - aka genericize the experience, rather than embracing the experience that makes the college game so unique... less Solid Gold Sound, Alumni Band and Cheerleader and more blasting the same music and sound FX as every other pro stadium... which has just increased in recent years. The difference and inferiority of that approach is really noticeable when you travel to places like LSU and PSU...
To enhance the home fan experience, maybe consider petitioning AD Martin Guerrero to remove all stadium tarps and instead have crash dummies placed in every empty seat at the Rose Bowl, where each fake Bruin fan is outfitted with speakers that will provide the desired crowd response and enthusiastic cheers for the home team during the game. The AD can also claim that every home game is a sellout and not have to conjure up bogus attendance figures anymore.
Alas, poor Skippy the Skipper! He brings spirit, vivaciousness, and life to his (thankfully) interim assignment. But he has inherited a program with 80 or so yutes on a death march.
Dire predictions of an "Oh-and-Something" season seem to be manifesting themselves. What goal can be striven for? Even a "read the room" upset of the ToeJams would not wash away the stink.
In a latest survey, Michigan is ranked #1 public university, ahead of Berkeley. This is by far the best indication affirming that academic excellence and athletic achievements can indeed co-exist. UCLA, wake up please. Spare no dimes anymore, find us another Nick Saban ASAP.
We are Bruin family. When we talk bruin athletics, we call a spade a spade. It is plain to see Jarmond needs to go and that UCLA can do well in both category mentioned. We don't need other irrelevant sideshows.
Regardless, Michigan and other institutions' high ranking among public universities is illustrative of the premise that academic excellence and athletic achievements can indeed co-exist. Who preempts UCLA from being #1 disinterests me. The point to be addressed is its inability to accomplish both when many others do.
I would disagree, 124 national titles, second to Stanford and leading #3 u$c. UCLA has always been a university of academic excellence, on top of recruiting great student athletes.
True. But my point is football and basketball generate the most revenues in NCAA athletics, not to mention their headlines grabbing potentials. If Michigan, among others, can excel perennially in both categories, why not UCLA with its great student athletes as you mentioned ???
Well, academic qualifications at Michigan were not the same at Ucla. That’s a fact. Secondly, Ucla still has more national titles than Michigan. Football has always been an issue at Ucla. For many years academic requirements could not be fulfilled by student athletes where the majority of universities had a lower standards for university acceptance. Still exist today. But to ignore Ucla national titles in many sports, it’s plain denial on your part.
At this point, we simply have to agree to disagree. What I had denied, in your word, is basically what I know as facts the way you claimed yours to be. Fair ?
I attended UCLA too except my grad school was in Big Ten territory. UCLA's many national titles enamor me just as much as you do. But football and basketball are the two top headlines grabbers, revenue sports for any NCAA Division I programs. That is all I want to say.
For the first time in a REALLY, REALLY LONG time, I have had to remove multiple comments from this conversation due to violations of TMB's community guidelines and will issue strikes as appropriate.
I just want to offer a friendly reminder that this is NOT a forum for the discussion of politics. Period.
If you want to discuss politics, take it to Facebook.
Here we discuss Bruin athletics and only Bruin athletics. We haven't even had a conversation all year regarding some of the more important issues facing collegiate athletics here because they have not been relevant, to date, to Bruin athletics. (Just in case you aren't sure what I'm alluding to, I suggest you Google "San Jose State women's volleyball").
While there may be a time at some point in the near future where we may need to do so, we won't until we absolutely have to and, if that time ever comes, we will keep the conversation on point and it will not devolve into name-calling or attacking fellow members. And, if we do end up having a conversation about those issues, we will discuss it in a mature, respectful way and there will be consequences for anyone failing to do so.
One of the things which has made TMB special for so many of us is that it allows us to get away from "everything in the news," regardless of which side you may or may not be on.
Bruin athletics gives us a way to unite us at a time when there is an awful lot out there to divide us. TMB will continue to be a platform where that principle and the principles of respectful discourse will be followed.
Anybody know if there's an active AD search committee? I suspect the current AD isn't going anywhere anytime soon, even if his seat gets too hot for him. Telling him to "read the room" won't help because he's now the only person in the room. I thought former HC Chip Alford's Year-1 was awful, but this year is a possible winless season, and maybe a worst-ever Rose Bowl attendance record as well. Truly sad that the continuous seasons of apathy and incompetence have finally resulted in the UCLA football program actually becoming much worse than mediocre.
Yes, I just read LA Times Ben Bloch. According to his reporting, they hired Bob Myers, former warrior GM, Adam Peters, Casey Wasserman, Erin Atkins and Eric Kendricks
Those are the HC search committee members. My question about an AD search committee was more of a rhetorical one, though. Besides the eventual signing of a new HC, it will be interesting to see how the timing and selection of a new AD unfolds, assuming of course that Chancellor Frenk and the UCLA administration are dedicated to building and sustaining a competitive football program, instead of the business as usual mediocrity. The Blockhead administration and the appointed ADs (Guerrero 1 & 2) have failed us miserably.
More than Jarmond has to be "cleaned out" here. I'd say the entire Center needs to go! It's time. Supporters of this University and their Athletic programs deserve more and have for a long time now and we all keep receiving less. Most of the people in Morgan Center are very well paid and haven't earned that pay for years now. The gravy train needs to stop. Frenk needs to realize that the entire Athletics Dept at UCLA is now a Cancer, and it needs to be eradicated immediately. A full rebuild is needed. Yes, this will take time, but we have all already suffered over time with mediocre or poor performances from this department for the past 10-15 years! So, everyone here and all Bruin alumnus's have already experienced this OVER TIME. I for one am willing to go on a 5-year plan to fix it all, once in for all. Of course this won't happen, simply because it should happen. It's the only fix that will return this Athletic Dept back to excellence, a goal that has been far too elusive for far too long.
Hey bud, let it go. We are Bruin family.
Really ??? No big deal, bro. Just let it go or you risk the attention of our editor.
Great minds, Joe 💙💛...
I just posted the link to Tracy Pierson's story in the 'Slow Start...' post.
Defintely a must 'Read the Room' article pointed at the embattled Jelly 2.0.
The black & white van was epic, and I believe the Bruin Fam has reached the precipice.
Enough is enough!
Jelly 2.0 must go!
Clicked link, email sent. Thanks for the heads up Joe!
My parents' dog is named "Molly", so I submitted one for her too. Fire Martin Guerrero now!
"That’s really when UCLA’s current death spiral began" I would argue that it began with the hiring of Alford...
LOL
An argument can be made for all sorts of different things as to when it began.
A good case could be made for the hiring of Guerrero, too.
Though I was specifically referring to the most current event. LOL

BC alum here. We SUFFERED through years of this HORRIBLE AD. He ruined BC sports and we are now just rebuilding. Good luck, he is the WORST!!!!

..seems The Fetus has been racking up lots of fans and his previous gig!

Exactly! They engage the crowd, but don't inspire and stir up energy.
Well, winning solves a lot of problems. But, yeah.
Even with winning, it will be a meh experience.

The only resolution: FIRE THE "FETUS"!
War,
I must proclaim this now...
Skippy (Peanut Butter 1.0) has now been reduced to PB 1.0 which ironically pairs with Jelly 2.0.
That is all...
"Chunky" or "Smooth", dear lady?
Leaning 'Chunky' 🤣
Done. I suggest you spell check the document before sending it. There are a few sloppy errors....

*Steps off his soapbox*
Jarmond’s ego is to big. He!ll never “read the room”because he is unconscious.
I am with you on this one, bro. He is in over his head, as they say.
Anybody know if there's an active AD search committee? I suspect the current AD isn't going anywhere anytime soon, even if his seat gets too hot for him. Go Bruins.
When the discussion on this site goes from UCLA football to political assertions, I leave the room.
Tamara said it well. We are Bruin family. When the discussions veered of course, I did what i could to steer it back.
Nice effort, hope you could do the same with the UCLA football program, but unfortunately that hole looks way too deep... :-(
Come back, dude. It is all quiet on the western front.

Does anybody know how to perform reincarnation ? We need Charles Young and JD Morgan ASAP.
