The last time San Diego State visited the Rose Bowl to play the Bruins, the Aztecs won for the first time after going winless in the first 22 meetings between the schools. Three years ago, UCLA made sure SDSU didn’t win two games in a row when they met at Snapdragon Stadium in San Diego.
This evening, the Bruins will look to extend their streak over the Aztecs to two games in a row when the teams meet at the Rose Bowl at 4:15 pm. Today’s game will be broadcast on Big Ten Network with Wayne Randazzo and former Bruin QB Brett Hundley calling the game. UCLA will also be looking to make it two in a row under new head coach Bob Chesney. What will it take to do that? Let’s look at the keys to the game.
Keys to the Game
1. Run the Ball Well
Last week, the Bruins ran the ball better in one game than they did all of last season. That doesn’t excuse the slow start first quarter or the fact that the Bruin offense disappeared completely in the third quarter either.
So, now, UCLA just needs to build on last week and run the ball well again this week.
2. Control the Line of Scrimmage
Again, the Bruins did a good job of controlling the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball. They just need to be more consistent throughout the game. The touchdown drive to end the first half stands out as one of those times where they failed to control the line of scrimmage. They can’t continue to have those kind of breakdowns as the season progresses.
3. Clean Things Up
There were definitely a lot of things to clean up from last week’s game. Penalties immediately go to the top of the list, but mental breakdowns are up there to because they led to touchdowns like the one which ended the half. It’s frequently said that teams make their biggest improvement between their first and second games. So, now would be a good time to clean stuff up from last week.
