The Rose Bowl.
Purdue has only played in the building twice ever. The last time they played here was the 2001 Rose Bowl Game which they lost to Washington when Drew Brees was Purdue’s starting quarterback. Now, the Boilermakers may bring Brees in for a pregame pep talk, but he ain’t suiting up tonight!
Their only win came in 1967 when they beat Southern Cal 14-13. The greedy Trojans went for the win in the fourth quarter and the two-point conversion was intercepted.
That’s it.
So, most years, Purdue football and the Rose Bowl have maintained a relationship like Santa and the M&M’s in the famous “They do exist! He does exist!” commercial. In other words, rarely the two shall meet!
Will the Rose Bowl hold the same mystique and aura for the Boilermakers that Yankee Stadium has for opponents in October? I don’t know, but Yankee fans help do that and, tonight, UCLA fans need to also.
Let’s look at the Keys to the Game.
Keys to the Game
1. No Fly Zone
Purdue quarterback Ryan Browne has thrown for more than 300 yards in both of the Boilermakers’ games this season. Between the Bruin pass rush and the secondary, UCLA needs to prevent Browne from doing it again this week.
2. Knight-Knight-Knight
The game starts at 11 pm ET. That is going to be tough on the Boilermakers. Of course, Wayne needs to be ready to tuck the Purdue defense in for bed.
3. 60-Minute Fourth Quarter
The Bruins have proven to be a fourth quarter team so far this season. So, tonight, they should really come about and play one 60-minute long fourth quarter. That will ensure both a fast start, a strong finish and a good in-between as well!
