It was the Dylan Andrews Show yesterday afternoon at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas as the sophomore guard scored almost half of the Bruins’ points against Oregon State yesterday. It was as though Andrews was determined to will UCLA into the next round.
As the Bruins advance, they will need other guys to start picking it up. To be sure, Andrews had some big time help from Adem Bona who scored 17 yesterday, but that was it. No other Bruin was in double figures.
In tournament play, this type of performance where one guy takes his team on his shoulders is sometimes needed, but the Bruins definitely need guys like Lazar Stefanovic and Sebastian Mack to pick it up for the inevitable situation where Andrews gets shut down by an opponent.
Starting Five
It looks like Dana Altman will trot out his third different startiing lineup the Bruins have seen this season.
In addition to N’Faly Dante, Jermaine Couisnard, Jackson Shelsted, and Jadrian Tracey, look for Dana Altman to start freshman Kwame Evans, Jr. instead of Kario Oquendo. That won’t mean that Oquendo won’t play more than Evans because he played 24 minutes against Utah in the regular season finale to just 22 minutes for Evans. It just means that Altman is being Altman by tinkering around with his lineup for the Ducks’ advantage.
Analysis
This afternoon’s game is going to be a tough one. These teams split the series with the home team winning each time. So, today’s neutral court game in Las Vegas gives each team something prove.
The Ducks are 3.5-point favorites to win this afternoon. That’s not much. I like UCLA’s chances against Oregon, mostly because they found a way to beat them at home most recently.
Of course, that was a month and a half ago, and it seems like years due to the Bruins’ late season skid.
The Ducks, however, finished their regular season on a low note too. They’ve lost three of their last five games, including one to UC Berkeley. They squeaked past Utah, 66-65, to wrap up the regular season, and they topped Oregon State, 78-71, for their other win.
This game feels ripe for the taking. If UCLA can generate enough offense this afternoon, look for a Bruin upset.
