Mellor was always a bad reporter who just regurgitates things he reads. No actual investigation. Way to much credence in anonymous sources. “From what I’m hearing, UCLA could potentially try and court Pete Carroll." What? From what you are "hearing?" What are you, Stephen A. Smith pretending you employ a team of elves that sneak around NBA locker rooms and call you in the middle of the night with info that is usually wrong? Well guess what, I'm "hearing" that UCLA "could" be interested in Nick Saban if he becomes available. I heard it from some guys in a bar who heard it from some people close to UCLA. UCLA "could" "potentially" court Carroll? Sure they "could." They also "could" court every other coach in the country if they wanted to.
Agreed. Mellor is not a reliable source. Granted he was handed a difficult task when he was supposed to carry the 5 SB Nation sites in CA, but it was clear then he wasn't going to write anything other than clickbait.
Hmm... re: Justin Frye, I guess it's an upward move career-wise to go from an offensive coordinator to an offensive line coach, if the teams are UCLA and Ohio State?
He was our OC in name only, mostly to justify his 700k salary, but Chip calls the plays. And he's going to be more than OSU's O-Line coach. He will also have the official title of run game coordinator, similar as to Fisch was Michigan's pass game coordinator but not OC.
OSU is a perennial contender and Frye is most certainly a future head coach -- he was never going to stay at UCLA long term.
take it as a compliment. The excellent assistants never stick around anywhere. If they do, it's usually because nobody wants to give them something better. See eg our DC. Frye has left our line and run game in excellent shape.
This has been expected for a very long time. We should be happy it did not happen sooner. Maybe we cause use some of the money on a better defensive coordinator.
Saw this article and just felt it was a bit of clickbait, not a serious option. Call it ageism, but even ignoring the particular individual, I’d rather not hire a 70 year old to rebuild the program and lift it to a higher orbit. To me, it’s a 5 year plus project (although some results and the trajectory should be seen earlier) and it also is going to take some serious recruiting power. I don’t know a multi millionaire nonagenarian is going to relate to the top high school recruits.
On a similar note, I’m very worried about our lack of quality recruiting right now. A few more targets committing to other schools today. Some people are arguing that we’re building more from the portal than high school, but it seems we’re losing as much talent to the portal as we’re getting. I think we’re up to 12 players leaving to the portal (plus a few opting to enter the draft), so my gut is saying our talent level will decline next year. I was also searching for any articles on the Aranda rumour to see if there’s anything to it, but instead saw a piece on Kelly recruiting. This was back when the Oregon job was still open and the gist of the piece was that maybe he was leaving as he was recruiting in generic Nike gear, not UCLA apparel (and not Air Jordan/Jumpman). Probably a story about nothing, but I have to say it pisses me off. At best it’s lazy for Kelly not to rep the school, at worst it’s disrespectful and says he thinks he’s more important than the school or the program. [And I’d say that it’s a bad pitch if you’re saying ‘come play for a coach’ when the coach may or may not be around in a year or 2.]
It’s going to be interesting to see what happens over the next fortnight. It feels like we may be scrambling to fill some big coaching positions (OC, DC, HC?).
The ONLY reason for the Bruins to even consider hiring Carroll is to get the opportunity to fire him immediately. Happy that he didn't make the playoffs this year.
HE-double hockey sticks, NO!
