Nebraska Cornhuskers at UCLA Bruins Game Thread
UCLA is looking to regain its momentum as Nebraska visits the Rose Bowl.

Nebraska is back under Matt Rhule. The Huskers are a quality football team again while the Bruins remain a work in progress. It’s the difference between a school which is serious about football and one which is still trying to find solutions for the issues their program has had.
For a while, these schools seemed to be a parallel courses with neither on going much of anywhere. But now, the Huskers seem to have found their guy while the Bruins are in the midst of another coaching search.
On paper, these teams present a very interesting matchup. Nebraska seems to be very solid on both sides of the ball. Meanwhile, the Bruins had a solid month of October in their own right.
Let’s look at the keys to tonight’s game.
Keys to the Game
1. Run the Ball Effectively
This is the #1 key for this game for a reason. Nebraska’s stingy pass defense makes it a necessity. If the Huskers’ pass defense remains stingy, the Bruins will have to run the ball well in order to put the ball into the end zone. If they can’t run the ball, then they could find themselves scoring as many touchdowns in tonight’s game as they did against Indiana—zero.
2. Stop Emmett Johnson
With Nebraska running the ball more than 50% of the time and the overwhelming bulk of the carries going to Emmett Johnson, stopping him is critical to keeping the Huskers out of the end zone and/or minimizing the damage he can do.
If the Bruins are effective at stopping Johnson, it will force freshman QB TJ Lateef to have to throw the ball more to get first downs. Of course, that brings me to the third key.
3. Put Pressure on and Contain TJ Lateef
Getting to the true freshman quarterback can force a lot of mistakes and forced errors like fumbles and interceptions can win football games. The only real risk with this is that Lateef is a dual-threat QB. So, if UCLA is going to put him under pressure, they also can’t allow him to take off into the open field. So, containing him is as important as putting pressure on him.
