How To Watch, Game Preview and Game Thread: #2 UCLA Bruins at Southern Cal Trojans
The Big Ten champs head across town for a rematch against the rival Trojans.

This afternoon, the UCLA women’s basketball team will travel 12 miles across Los Angeles to take on crosstown rival Southern Cal. When these teams met in January, the Bruins destroyed the Trojans by 34 points. Now, they must go over to the Galen Center and try to do the same thing. Tip-off is set for 3 pm PT and the game will be broadcast on Fox Sports 1.
When the teams met at the beginning of January, it sent Southern Cal into a tailspin. They lost six of their next seven games. But, then, they bounced back with six wins in a row starting with then-#8 Iowa. Last week, however, the Trojans visited then-#10 Ohio State and Penn State and dropped both games.
Southern Cal Trojans’ Starting Five
Overall, expect today’s starting lineup to look similar, if not identical, to the Trojans’ starting lineup back when the teams played in January. Lindsey Gottlieb will almost certainly start the same four guards she started against the Bruins.
In that game, Kara Dunn led Southern Cal with 11 points and Jazzy Davidson scored 10 points. Meanwhile, Kennedy Smith put up seven and former Bruin Londynn Jones scored just six points.
The fifth starter last time was freshman forward Gerda Raulušaitytė, but she’s been replaced in the starting lineup of late by redshirt freshman Laura Williams, who’s averaging 2.9 ppg. That’s a slight upgrade from Raulušaitytė’s 2.4 ppg. Williams has done a better job rebounding, however. She is averaging 4.4 rpg compared to the Lithuanian’s 2.8 rpg. Against Penn State, Williams was tied for the team lead in rebounds with six. Dunn and Smith also grabbed six boards each. Meanwhile, Raulušaitytė didn’t score or grab a rebound in six minutes of action. So, even though Williams, at 6’2”, is an inch shorter than Raulušaitytė, she may be the better option for Gottlieb.
Analysis
The Bruins are going to play their game today. Southern Cal doesn’t have a player taller than 6’3” tall. So, it will be difficult for them to do much to stop Lauren Betts without double teaming her.
Of course, when they do that, it will open up another Bruin to score, much in the same way that it did in the first meeting.
The biggest question facing UCLA heading into today’s game is: How will the Bruins handle the hostile Galen Center crowd?
Today’s game may be closer, even a lot closer, than UCLA’s first meeting against the Trojans, but I fully expect the Bruins to play up to their usual standard this afternoon and complete the regular season undefeated in Big Ten play.
