How To Watch, Game Preview and Game Thread: #4 UCLA Bruins vs. Cal Poly Mustangs
The Bruins host the Cal Poly Mustangs to whom they have never lost.

Tonight, the UCLA women’s basketball team hosts the Cal Poly Mustangs at Pauley Pavilion at 7 pm.
By all accounts, tonight’s game should be over well before the end of the first quarter. That’s because the Mustangs are terrible as Cal Poly has won just two of their first nine games this season.
As if that’s not bad enough, their two wins came against Chapman University and UC Santa Cruz, both of whom are Division III schools.
The only team the Mustangs have played which comes close to being in the same league as the Bruins is Stanford, and the Cardinal crushed the Mustangs by a score of 90-55. This season, Stanford is off to a 9-2 with their two losses coming to Florida Gulf Coast and the same Tennessee team that the Bruins beat by 22 just a few weeks ago.
All this is to say that the Bruins could probably sit the usual starters for the entire game tonight and still win easily.
Last Time Out
It’s been nine days since UCLA played last. That’s when the Bruins hosted the Oregon Ducks to open Big Ten play. UCLA won this game easily by a score of 80-59.
Lauren Betts opened up the scoring with a layup just 23 seconds into the game. While the Bruins wouldn’t score the game-winning basket until Angela Dugalić’s layup with 2:27 left in the third quarter, the game was effectively over the moment Betts scored UCLA’s first points because the Ducks would never tie the game again.
For Betts, she went on to play her best game of the season so far. Not only did she go on to score a season-high 24 points to lead the Bruins, she also grabbed a season-high 14 rebounds and she blocked a season-high five shots.
Gianna Kneepkens added 17 points with nine of them coming on three-point shots while Croatian freshman Lena Bilić also finished in double figures with 13 points. Charlisse Ledger-Walker pulled down ten rebounds in the game and led the team in assists with eight.
Cal Poly’s Starting Five
Cal Poly will likely start a lineup consisting of three guards and two forwards.
The Mustangs are led by sophomore guard Vanessa McManus, who is averaging 20.1 ppg and freshman forward Charish Thompson who’s averaging 15.6 ppg. McManus is second on the team in rebounds with an average of 5.7 rpg, trailing only Thompson who is averaging 5.9 rpg. McManus is also second on the team in assists with 17 and Thompson is third in assists with 11.
The other starting forward will be sophomore Nora Perez. She is averaging 6.9 ppg and 5.4 rpg.
The other two starting guards will be redshirt junior Madison Butcher and redshirt sophomore Alana Goosby. Both Butcher and Goosby are averaging 4.3 ppg, and Goosby leads the Mustangs in steals with 13.

Couldn’t watch live but caught a few highlights. Coach Close commented that they had some trouble scheduling this year as many teams didn’t want to face them. Not bad to have a couple of ‘practice games’ before the BIG really starts as it will be a tough conference to play through. Hopefully it gives Sienna (and fingers crossed Timea) a chance to play into fitness and gel with the team.
I'll add another post to help fill up the empty white space. I much rather see the Lady Bruins play a team that's highly competitive and can challenge them to be better. A totally lopsided game against an inferior opponent like this doesn't do that.
