#11 UCLA Women's Basketball Hosts #1 Stanford Cardinal
The Bruins will look to knock off the top-ranked Cardinal this afternoon.
While the UCLA men’s basketball and football teams lost on Saturday, the UCLA women’s basketball was almost able to double up UC Berkeley, 71-37.
This afternoon, the Bruins will host a matinee at Pauley Pavilion against the #1 Stanford Cardinal.
Last Time Out
How badly did the Bruin rout the Golden Bears? Well, UCLA could have take the entire second half off after Michaela Onyenwere scored the Bruins first bucket of the second half and still won the game.
UCLA began the game by scoring the first six points on a pair of baskets from Onyenwere and one from Charisma Osborne.
The closest that the Bears would get from that would be when they cut the Bruin lead to just three points with 6:34 left in the first quarter. UCLA didn’t look back and, by the end of the first quarter, they led 19-8.
UCLA increased their lead in each of the final three quarters. They led 37-21 at the half and they outscored the Golden Bears, 37-16, in the second half.
Both Natalie Chou and Onyenwere finished with 18 points to lead the Bruins. While freshman Emily Bessoir finished with 13 points.
Stanford Cardinal
The Cardinal have started the season by winning their first six games. The closest anyone has come to knocking them off came on Saturday at the Galen Center when they defeated the Trojans, 80-60. Kiana Williams led Stanford in this one with 27 points while junior Lexie Hull added 16. Freshman Cameron Brink was also in double figures with 12 points. Sophomore guard Haley Jones grabbed 11 rebounds.
Analysis
Stanford is currently ranked #1 in the country ever and the team recently made news as head coach Tara VanDerveer became the winningest coach last week when she passed the legendary Pat Summitt. VanDerveer has beaten UCLA’s Cori Close in 14 of 17 previous meetings.
So, as much as I’d like to predict a Bruin victory, I wouldn’t have a lot of confidence in that prediction. I think Stanford will win this one, but not before UCLA puts a scare into the Cardinal.
