After two games on the road, the Bruins return to the friendly confines of the Rose Bowl for three consecutive games, starting with this afternoon’s game against the Badgers. Kickoff is set for 4:30 pm PT and the game will be broadcast on NBC, but after five consecutive wins to start the season, you really should be at the Rose Bowl to cheer on these Bruins.
After last week’s huge win over Oregon if you’re still suffering from BBS, I’m compelled to ask: What will it take to believe in this team and this coaching staff? If you haven’t already made plans to be at the Rose Bowl, what are you waiting for? Next week’s game against Michigan State is slated for either a Noon or 12:30 kickoff. Get to Pasadena and support your Bruins!
Today, the Bruins will face their second toughest test this season when the 4-1 Wisconsin Badgers led by Luke Fickell visit the Rose Bowl. Fickell won his last game in Pasadena against the Bruins and the Badgers have won three straight against UCLA including the Bruins’ last two Rose Bowl Games.
Wayne Knight has an opportunity today to etch his name into the memories of Badger fans like Ron Dayne did to UCLA fans back in 1999. That January day, Dayne ran for 246 yards and four touchdowns. I don’t expect Knight to run for that many yards or as many touchdowns because when you have Anthony Woods and Jaivian Thomas, he doesn’t have to, but 150 and three touchdowns for Knight should be more than enough.
Let’s look at this week’s Keys to the Game.
Keys to the Game
1. Contain Colton Joseph
Quarterback Colton Joseph is a dual-threat quarterback. He doesn’t have a particularly high completion percentage and he has been averaging one interception per game. As long as the Bruins can force him to throw the ball more and make him pay for it when he runs, the UCLA defense should be able to get off the field.
2. Pound the Rock
No one has been able to stop the Bruin rushing attack yet. While the Badgers aren’t giving up much yardage on the ground, they haven’t come across a running team like the Bruins, and of course, success on the ground takes a lot of pressure off the passing game which will be without Nico Iamaleava.
3. Win the Turnover Battle
The Bruins need to win the turnover battle. UCLA has been excellent when it comes to taking the ball away and Colton Joseph has been averaging one interception per game. I expect the Bruin secondary to pick off at least two, if not three, passes intended for Badger receivers.
