This evening, the UCLA Bruins host their final new opponent of the 2024 season, the Iowa Hawkeyes.
This morning, Dimitri informed me that, apparently, only paid subscribers have been able to comment on game threads recently. If that was the case, please accept our apologies. There were some changes made to the Substack platform recently which may have affected that without us knowing. So, today’s thread is being published like a regular article to make sure anyone can comment.
The last time UCLA played Iowa in football was here at the Rose Bowl for the 1986 Rose Bowl Game. The Bruins won that game easily 45-28. In fact, we had that game on while tailgating today simply because there were no other sports to watch live this afternoon.
This is the tenth meeting between the schools and the Bruins have won seven of the nine previous meetings.
Having watched the 1986 Rose Bowl this afternoon, it seems like the Iowa offense hasn’t changed much since then. Hawkeye quarterback Chuck Long took an awfully long time to throw a pass in that one and this year’s Hawkeye team doesn’t throw much either.
Let’s look at the Keys to tonight’s Game.
Keys to the Game
1. Establish the Short Pass
UCLA still cannot run the football, but they’ve had some moderate success using short passes in lieu of the run. They will need to do that again today against a Iowa team which is ranked 11th in the country against the run.
2. Stop Kaleb Johnson
Iowa runs the ball two-thirds of the time. Kaleb Johnson has carried the ball about as much as the rest of the Hawkeye team. If you stop him, you grind the Iowa offense to an absolute halt.
3. Homecoming Cooking
Tonight’s game is UCLA Homecoming. In all my time coming to UCLA football games, this is the first time the Homecoming game is on a Friday. Will tonight’s crowd be bigger than other Friday night games? Maybe because it is Homecoming. Let’s hope the crowd arrives early in spite of LA traffic.

Even the end zones have been thrown back tonight!
And, imagine, running the ball to run out the clock.
There’s a long way to go, but we’re getting a little closer!!
