The big question coming into this game is “Will Cam Rising play?”. It doesn’t matter if he does. The Bruin defense needs to stop the Utah run game to win today. In fact, that’s our first key to today’s game.
However, if Rising does play and UCLA forces the Utes to throw the ball, this game could turn into a shootout.
Let’s look at the Keys to the Game.
Keys to the Game
1. Stop the Ute Rushing Attack
Utah runs the ball a whopping 65% of the time. If UCLA stops the run, the Bruins should shut down the Utah offense.
2. Move the Sticks
The Utah defense has held opponents to a third down conversion rate of just 20% while the Bruins enter the game converting nearly 52% of their third down conversion attempts. If UCLA can move the sticks on first, second or third down, they will keep the punter off the field and eventually score, meaning they will likely put up enough points to win this game easily.
3. Line Wins Games
Utah is only allowing an average of 65 yards rushing per game. The Bruins like to run the ball. Whichever team wins the battle in the trenches will likely win this game. The Bruin offensive line has quietly become one of the team’s strengths under Chip Kelly. Let the big guys up front open up holes for Carson Steele, T.J. Harden and Anthony Adkins so they can do their thing.
Depth Chart
The Bruin offensive depth chart this week is almost identical to the depth charts from the first two weeks of the season. The only change flip-flops Lopez and Glessner as the team’s kickoff specialist.
Here is UCLA’s depth chart for today:
