The first time UCLA played Maryland was in 1954, the year UCLA won the school’s only football national championship. That year, the Terrapins visited the Coliseum and lost 12-7.
last time UCLA visited College Park, Maryland for a football game was 1955. That year, the Bruins were the defending AP national champs, but they traveled cross-country and lost to the Terps, 7-0. UCLA went on to finish 9-2 with their only other loss coming against Michigan State in the 1956 Rose Bowl.
UCLA wouldn’t meet Maryland again until last season.
Now, after losing to the Bruins last year at the Rose Bowl, Maryland would love to repeat history by beating UCLA in College Park. A Nor’easter that’s about to hit the East Coast could have something to say about that, but no, there’s no truth to the rumor that the storm has been named after Bruin running back Wayne Knight.
Odds
Last week, I took the Bruins and gave the points. Since UCLA won by 14, that makes last week a push. As a result, I’m now 2-0-1 against the spread this season. On the plus side, the Bruins almost took care of the Over on their own. Since I took the Over, I finally entered the win column and I’m now 1-2 for the year on the Over/Under.
The Bruins are favored by just 1.5 points in this game. UCLA is going 4-0 and they will win by more than a safety on the road. Take the Bruins and give the points again this week.
The Over/Under for this game is 56.5 points. I was initially going to pick the Over because it’s tempting to think Malik Washington’s arm is going to turn the game into a shootout. Then, I saw the weather forecast. It’s going to be a ground and pound kind of game, except Maryland has little pound to their ground. So, I’ve got to choose the Under this week due to bad weather all game long making it difficult to move the ball through the air.
Tailgating and Game Time Weather Forecast
Well, tomorrow’s game is definitely not being played at the Rose Bowl.
In College Park, Maryland tomorrow, it should be partly cloudy and about 60° when the parking lots open at 7:30 am ET for tailgating. Unfortunately, the weather may not get much nicer than that. Sure, it will warm up to a high of 65° at 11 am, but whatever sun there may have been will be long gone.
Rain is expected to arrive around noon ET and it should continue well past the end of the end of the game.
Meanwhile, the temperature will slip to 64° at kickoff and a little more to 63° by the end of the first quarter. That’s the point when fans should appreciate a little good news weather-wise: It won’t get any colder for the remainder of the game.
The bad news, of course, is that fans may feel colder due to the continued rain.
