It has been nine years since UCLA beat Oregon. Jim Mora was still the Bruins’ head coach and the Bruins won the game, 31-14. But that game was played at the Rose Bowl.
To find a game which UCLA won against the Ducks in Eugene, you have to go all the way back to the Karl Dorrell era to November 2004 when the Bruins prevailed, 34-26. That’s twenty-two years ago.
Since that game, UCLA has lost eight straight games at Autzen Stadium.
Since that game, the Bruins have won just twice against the Ducks while losing 12 times.
So, there may not be a better yardstick to measure the progress Bob Chesney’s Bruins have made than a game against Oregon. By 4 pm PT tomorrow, we should have a better idea if this year’s Bruins are for real or if there’s a lot more work to be done.
Odds
Two weeks ago, I took the Bruins and gave the point and a half. Since UCLA won by 51, it was an easy win. As a result, I’m now 3-0-1 against the spread this season. What I didn’t expect was that the Bruins almost took care of the Over on their own. I thought the weather would make it a much lower scoring game than it turned out to be. Since I took the Under, I added another loss on the Over/Under ledger and I’m now 1-3 for the year on the Over/Under.
This week, Oregon opened as a 12.5-point favorite. While the action since has cut the spread to 10.5 points, I don’t think it matters. UCLA may not win this game, but they are going to cover the spread. Take the Bruins and the points this week, and don’t be surprised if someone on College GameDay takes the Bruins as their Superdog pick (I’m looking at you, Herbie!)
The Over/Under for this game started at 60.5 points and now sits at 58.5 points. Looking at UCLA, three of the Bruins’ four games have had more than 58.5 points scored. Only UCLA’s game against San Diego State totaled less than 58.5 points. All of Oregon’s games have exceeded 58.5 points. So, I’ve got to believe this game will total out to more than 58.5 even if the Ducks somehow manage to cover the spread.
Tailgating and Game Time Weather Forecast
After the game in Maryland two weeks ago, tomorrow’s weather forecast looks positive. That’s mostly because no rain is expected in Eugene, but don’t expect it to be a Pasadena Chamber of Commerce Day either.
In Eugene tomorrow, it should be partly cloudy and about 42° when the parking lots open at 7:00 am PT for tailgating. It will warm up to about 57° in time for kickoff at 12:30 pm PT, but whatever sun there may have been will likely be gone and it will remain mostly cloudy all afternoon.
Meanwhile, the temperature will continue to warm up a little, but barely, to 59° by the end of the first half. Expect the temperature in the second half to stay at about 60° until the game is over.
Let’s take a look at how to watch, listen and stream tomorrow’s game.
