Tonight, the #22 UCLA Bruins return home from a victorious season opener against Arizona to take on the North Florida Ospreys. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30PM PT.
This game marks the beginning of a stretch of cupcakes for the Bruins. There is always a chance that the UCLA will experience a letdown following the emotional high of beating Arizona, but frankly, I can’t see that happening. This UCLA team already seems bought in to Cronin’s standards regarding effort, which we actually saw during the exhibition wins over Cal Baptist and San Diego.
The Cal Baptist win may prove the most illuminating as that is the team North Florida defeated in their season opening win. In that game, the Ospreys had five players with double digit scoring, led by Kent Jackson who had 15 points. It is impressive on its face for a team to come across the country and win an opener and it is especially intriguing to see a team with a balanced scoring outlet. But at the same time UCLA absolutely blew out Cal Baptist, and the talent disparity between these two teams cannot be understated. Just from height perspective, the tallest North Florida player stands at 6’9”, which is the same height as UCLA forward Nicola Kusturica; Xavier Booker should theoretically have a field day in the interior, while the UCLA guards should not have as much to worry about from a rim protection standpoint.
What I will be watching here, and for the next run of games, is what things will the Bruins choose to focus on. For example, I think this game represents a good opportunity for the Bruins to work on some interior scoring. Give Booker and Eric Daley Jr. as many touches in the low post as possible. Let Kusturica operate with the ball in his hands, and have him focus on getting to the rim. Attack the paint as much as possible. Between Trent Perry and Jaylen Petty, I don’t think UCLA has to worry much about outside shooting, so start working the inside part to round out the offense.
