The UCLA Bruins have now won three games in a row and five of their last six. They have moved into a four-way tie for fourth place in the Pac-12. They are just one game out of second place and two games behind first-place Arizona.
That makes tonight’s game against Stanford even more important. The winner of tonight’s game will at least retain a portion of fourth place, and they could move into a tie for either second or third depending on how Washington State and Oregon fare tomorrow night
Since beating the Bruins in Westwood last month, the Cardinal have gone 4-4. But, unlike the Bruins, they haven’t been able to piece together a winning streak.
That doesn’t mean that Stanford hasn’t improved since visiting Westwood.
In fact, the most significant move which Stanford coach Jarod Haase has made since the teams’ last meeting is promoting freshman sensation Kanaan Carlyle into the starting lineup. In fact, it’s likely the only change Haase will make to his starting lineup.
Against the Bruins, Carlyle scored 17 points in more than 31 minutes off the bench. In fact, he played more minutes in that game than any of other player on the team, even though he didn’t start.
Carlyle is now averaging 14.3 ppg, which is good for second on the team. He is averaging less than half a point behind Maxime Reynaud, who’s averaging 14.6 ppg.
In fact, finding a way to stop Carlyle may be the most important thing the Bruins can do to win tonight because he was the only Cardinal in double figures when the teams met last month.
UCLA even held Reynaud to just eight points in that game.
Considering the 59-53 final score in that matchup, something to watch out for tonight is UCLA’s improving offense. You could argue that the Stanford loss was more about the Bruins’ offensive woes than bad defense. After all, UCLA held the Cardinal to less than 60 points and it was the Bruins’ second-worst offensive performance of the season. Only the Utah game was worse.
The Bruins shot just 32.8% from the field and a worse 23.1% from three-point range.
So, almost any improvement in those two categories should go a long way towards a Bruins’ win tonight.

But I know this is in addition to everyone working and having time for family and life in general. But this place is great. I really like the atmosphere here compared to the Sb nation site.
