How To Watch, Game Preview and Game Thread: UCLA Women's and Men's Basketball Season Opening Doubleheader
The women open the season against San Diego State in Anaheim while the #12 men's team hosts Eastern Washington.

Today is the day we’ve all been waiting for ever since the UCLA football team opened its 2025 season with a loss to the Utah Utes. That’s right! The college basketball season opens tonight!
I would suggest that our long national nightmare is over, but that assumes that the football program has actually been fixed.
Instead, it’s only gotten worse. And, it didn’t get any better when the Rose Bowl announced that they are suing UCLA because some genius seems to think that cutting the commute in half while destroying tailgating completely is going to solve the attendance problem.
Thankfully, Cori Close, Mick Cronin, Lauren Betts and Donovan Dent are here to help numb the pain. In case you missed this year’s Big Men’s Basketball Preview, you still have time to check it out before tipoff tonight.
Last season, San Diego State made the NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament for the first time since 2012, but they were quickly bounced by LSU, 103-48. The Bruins also faced the Tigers in the NCAA Women’s Tournament and they beat them 72-65 to advance to the Women’s Final Four.
The Bruin women are looking to improve on that finish this year. The core of Kiki Rice, Lauren Betts and Gabriela Jaquez are back for what should be another Final Four run. UCLA has added freshman Sienna Betts to help them get there, though the younger Betts sister will miss tonight’s opener. They’ve also added Megan Grant from the Bruin softball team, and it looks like she will play both sports for UCLA this year. Gianna Kneepkens joins the Bruins after playing last season at Utah. Swedish freshman Christina Karamouzi is another new face.
The Bruins have lost Janiah Barker, Londynn Jones who went across town to Southern Cal, Elina Aarnisalo and Kendall Dudley from last year’s squad.
Tonight’s men’s game should be over by halftime.
Dan Monson’s Eastern Washington Eagles went 10-22 last year and they finished eighth in the ten-team Big Sky Conference behind Idaho and Northern Arizona but in front of Weber State and Sacramento State.
Prior to taking over the Eagles, Monson was the head coach at Long Beach State from 2007 to 2024. He took the 49ers to the NCAA Tournament twice while at Long Beach State. He also led Gonzaga to the 1999 Elite Eight and was hired by Minnesota during the summer.

Tyler Bilodeau disasterclass keeping EWU in the game so far.
If Bilodeau plays like a human defensively instead of whatever this is, UCLA would be up comfortably.
