How to Watch Coastal Carolina at UCLA: Game Time, TV Schedule, Radio and More
The Bruins open the 2023 season when they host the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers.
Much to the delight of every Bruin fan who tried to sit through last year’s Bowling Green game, the UCLA Bruins open the 2023 season by hosting the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers (pronounced SHON-ti-cleers) in a night game. Unfortunately, the powers that be at Disney/ESPN have decided to remove their channels from about 5 million homes in Southern California. That means that watching this game will be difficult for many of our readers.
The last time a UCLA game was not aired live was the 2009 Oregon State game, which was broadcast on tape delay. Technically, this game will not snap that streak, but it certainly goes without saying that Bruin fans have gotten accustomed to watching UCLA play live, and frankly, it’s sad that Disney’s corporate greed will keep many fans from being able to watch this game from the comfort of your homes.
But, hey! You should be coming out to the Rose Bowl to cheer the Bruins on anyway!
The Chants play in the Sun Belt Conference and the last time the Bruins played a Sun Belt opponent was last season when they needed a late comeback to defeat the South Alabama Jaguars at the Rose Bowl. Over the past few years, CCU has been one of the best teams in the Sun Belt Conference and Chanticleer QB Grayson McCall has been the conference’s Player of the Year in each of the past three seasons. So, tomorrow night’s game will not be a cakewalk.
It’s the start of what could be an interesting season for the Bruins. Chip Kelly’s buyout is $8.5M if he is dismissed before December 2023 and just $4.27M if he is terminated before December 2024. So, his buyout is certainly manageable at this point. He has lost two of the offensive horses who have led the Bruins the past few seasons. If the Bruins fail to replicate the success of last season, this could be Kelly’s last season in Westwood.
Now, I know many Bruin fans wouldn’t mind seeing Kelly go away, but it’s the start of the season and hope springs eternal. Let’s hope that Kelly and the Bruins can replicate last season’s success.
Keys to the Game
Let’s move on to the keys to the game.
1. Stop Grayson McCall
If there is one thing which would go a long way to a Bruin victory, it would be stopping three-time Sun Belt Player of the Year Grayson McCall. McCall’s touchdown to interception ratio is insane. The guy just doesn’t throw the ball where opponents can catch it. A few picks by the Bruin defense would really be helpful tomorrow night.
2. Score Like a Voter in Chicago
The Bruin offense needs to score like a voter in Chicago — early and often! They just need to pummel the Chants into submission. If the Bruin defense can find a way to get in on that act as well, it would be extremely helpful.
But the big reason UCLA needs to score early and often is in case the Bruin defense struggles to contain Grayson McCall. The longer UCLA keeps punter Will Powers off the field, the better their chances are to win this game.
3. Next Man Up
If UCLA does nothing else tomorrow, the Bruins need to find replacements for DTR & Zach Charbonnet.
The Bruin offensive depth chart almost looks like a prix fixe menu. You have three choices at quarterback and three more options at running back. On Monday, Chip Kelly said that, while Ethan Garbers will start, all three QBs will get time on Saturday. It looks like the same thing will happen at running back where TJ Harden or Carson Steele or Colson Yankoff are all listed.
In fact, the offensive depth chart has two more positions, tight end and a receiver spot, where more than players are listed as potential starters. I get the fact that guys have earned playing time, but how hard is it for Kelly and his staff to decide on a starter?
Interestingly, there is no ambiguity on the defensive side of the ball, which is a little surprising, given how the defense was the unit with the most problems last season.
