I dont see how a salary cap would work. There are so many ways in college to circumvent that. You could sign players and pay them above your cap by having boosters pay them outside of the program under an NIL deal or some other nonsensical arrangement to funnel $$ into their pockets while they are on the books for far less on the compensation side so the "payroll" stays within cap limits.
This entire thing ruined college sports. I think Id rather see it go back to true amateur status and lose the top talent to minor leagues or whatever else. The level of competition would reset to that level and the schools could compete on equal footing... not that that was ever happening but it wasnt this insane.
16 game playoff, eliminate conference championships games....Championship game at Rose Bowl on Jan 1.....everything else has pretty much been ruined with NIL, the ridiculous transfer portal and signing schedule so at least let us have this.
Always an interesting discussion. For me, if I had a blank sheet to start from, I’d make a 2-tier regional structure. Not sure if 4 or 6 regions works best (8-12 conferences). The main thing I’d do is bring in promotion and relegation between the 2 conferences in each area. So in the west you’d have the PAC and WAC for example, and say the bottom 2 PAC teams get relegated, the top 2 WAC teams get promoted, and have a playoff (bowl) between the 3rd last PAC and 3rd place WAC team. It gives meaning to so many more late season games, gives access to all schools, and eliminates arguments about strength of schedule as only the top conferences would send teams to the playoff.
I’d also like to see a salary cap by sport for at least the main sports because if you only have an overall cap I think it drives schools to specialise. For example, do North Carolina, UConn, and Kentucky decide to put all their money into basketball, and schools like Alabama and Ohio State underfund basketball for Foitball. It also would prevent schools from buying a championship in something like softball.
Enforcement is really tricky given the number of teams and real NIL (where a player does a legit All State ad for example) is still a problem to resolve I think.
