Fresno State Bulldogs at UCLA Bruins Game Thread
UCLA sends off the seniors with a final home game against the Bulldogs.
It’s another Chamber of Commerce day today in Pasadena, making it a great day for a football game. It’s also Senior Day. So, UCLA’s seniors will honored in pre-game ceremonies.
Unfortunately, those are the only two exciting things about today’s game, at least for Bruin fans. UCLA’s loss last week to Southern Cal means the Bruins have seven losses, which is too many to go to a bowl game.
Of course, since it’s a non-conference game, there is nothing on the line for UCLA today except for pride. Fresno State, however, is looking for their seventh win of the season. A win by the Bulldogs today should help interim head coach Tim Skipper’s chances of being the permanent replacement to Jeff Tedford, who stepped down (again) this summer due to health reasons.
Considering that this game is officially a throwaway for UCLA, I expect the smallest home crowd of the year and I won’t be surprised if Bruin fans are outnumbered by Fresno State fans this afternoon.
Let’s hope this is a one-time situation and not the start of an annual trend.
Let’s look at the keys to today’s game.
Keys to the Game
1. Run the Ball Like the Iowa Game
After winning three games in a row, UCLA took step backs last week against Southern Cal and the week before against Washington. If the Bruins want to be successful today against the Bulldogs, they need to run the ball the way they did against Iowa three weeks ago.
2. Pressure Mikey Keene
Mikey Keene is not a mobile quarterback. He has lost 186 yards rushing this year. In fact, Fresno State does not have a very good running attack. If UCLA can get to Keene, it will go a long way toward disrupting the Bulldog offense and towards a Bruin win.
3. Finish Strong
After losing the last two games, the Bruins will not be going bowling. That means that it’s even more important for UCLA to win today not only to send off the seniors with a win but also to give the coaching staff a little bit of momentum as they try to put together the best recruiting class since Jim Mora was fired.
