Bad News Bruins! Five Errors Prove Costly as UCLA Falls to Hokies, 7-2
UCLA will look to rebound after their worst game in nearly three years.

Back in November 2018 when we were all still writing at BruinsNation.com, Steve Jacobs wrote one of his Pregame Guesses articles which featured Georges Bizet’s Carmen as the musical piece for the week. Well, as the first inning of last night’s UCLA softball game unfolded, and the entire game for that matter, it was clear that Sportscenter’s highlights of the game, if they showed them, should have had Bizet’s score being played while they were being shown. That’s how bad the Bruins played last night.
It was such a bad game that it looked like Kelly Inouye-Perez had just passed out uniforms to the first ten women she found on campus. Last night, the Bruins couldn’t catch and they sure couldn’t hit. The team that hit back-to-back-to-back homers last weekend couldn’t buy a hit until the fifth inning. The first six Bruins, and seven of the first nine, all struck out.
Rachel Garcia gave up six runs, four of which were earned, in four-plus innings in the circle before she was replaced by Megan Faraimo. Meanwhile, Keely Rouchard had a perfect game going until Maya Brady drew a one-out walk in the fifth.
Overall, the Bruins could only muster three hits, two of which came in the fifth inning. That fifth-inning rally included a two-RBI single from Jenavee Peres, who was pinch-hitting for Thessa Malau’ulu. And that pretty much sums up the Bruins’ night offensively.
It was the worst loss for the Bruins since the WCWS game they lost to Florida State, 12-6, in 2018 which ended their season that year. At least when UCLA took a beating yesterday, it was because of the play on the field this time and not the coaching.
