I think Terry was 60 or 63; the defensive tackles in the 6-2 they ran back then wore 60's. His cohort on the other side Alan Claman, another a gutty little Bruin under 6' and 200 lbs., also wore a number in the 60's. 42 was the great Jackie Robinson.
Thanks to you all for the responses! In the event you don't know the game where that pic was shot (and I suspect with a sobriquet of Grider55, you do), it was the 1965 UCLA-USC "Beban Bomb game. As I recall, Dallas Grider jumped on the onsides kick after the first bomb. Sadly, he left us in 2022. As did Kurt Altenberg earlier.
Was at that game with my fiancé (now my ex) and in a fit of unalloyed ecstasy we all ran out on the field and I remember pummeling a player who, in turn, pummeled me back (joyously). I recall him being Dallas Grider!
Prothro's anecdotes after the game (during his weekly show) described how he observed Mike Garrett (#20) briefly resting 5 or so seconds after tackles to compose himself. So Prothro advised the UCLA defense to, 'Hep him up' and break up his respite.
So, do those ole unis look fierce or what? Especially when mud-and-blood-splattered. "Gutty Little Bruins" my ass!
Hey, you might have been that guy I bumped into on the field that day! A buddy and me and four bus transfers to get to the Mausoleum that day. Raced from our seats around the second row at the 20. Yep, 14 and starting play linebacker at Santa Monica High and Grider was my hero. Hurt when I found out earlier this year he had passed. Lived and died with that Cinderella team and can still name most of the players. Will never forget that year. Btw, Dallas also recovered the on-side in the Rose Bowl that lead to another, as it turned out, game winning TD. Go Bruins!
Those were the days, weren't they? You're right about Dallas recovering the RB fumble but was not sure about the onside kick! The Wiki on the game confirms it -- also a great write-up on the RB as well - particularly the play where Bob Apisa was stopped on the attempted two-point conversion by -- get this -- by Jim Colletto and Dallas Grider and then stopped by Bobby Stiles who got knocked cold. I commend the article to you.
Like you, I was addicted to the Prothro teams -- particularly that year -- having watched Billy Barnesmell and Larry Zeno stink up the joint the previous year. I came over in the Lambdachi Frat club bus (the house I pledged) and we had the obligatory keg and what amounts to tail gating in those days.
They were my heroes, that team. If only The Chipster or another could wake up those memories!
You're not droning on; I love this stuff. In many ways, this venue is great -- far better than the old site; more "intimate". I knew about Bob Stiles' sushi bars but did not know about Bob Apisa's future career. I notice with great warmth that Both Bobs because fast friends over the years. Always wished I had visited one of Stiles' establishments and -- perchance -- had him sign a jersey or something.
I remember listening to so many games on the radio driving 80 miles home from my days in the symphony world. Chris had such a lilting voice and he was the best in creating such vivid imagery of everything happening in the game - it felt like you were watching in living color. He loved UCLA so much and was so genuine. Truly a legend 🙏💙💛
I enjoyed Chris as well and he shall be missed. I also remember fondly Mike Walden who came to UCLA after being the USC announcer. Mike overcame that stigma to call some memorable games. What endeared Mike to me was his doing the announcer/host duties for Super Dave and his humorous adventures. Jesus, were they funny!
And, of course, dear beloved "fumbling" Fred Hessler who made listening to UCLA football on radio an unmitigated challenge!
I used to grind my teeth as he relayed the results of a pass play over the KMPC air waves.
"So, now..Beban back..um..er..he tosses the ball up field..to Altenberg..who..(drowned by Mausoleum cheering)..um..er..INCOMPLETES IT!"
Incompletes it!
It was an agonizing experience!
But the good Lord Jehovah touched Fred that one immortal night when Lew Alcindor & Company exacted their revenge on Elvin "the miniscule E" Hayes and the Houston Kewgars in the NCAA semis at the Sports Arena.
Fred was on fire that night, spinning out a breathtaking commentary as perfect and as skillful as the Bruins were on the court. Never missed a syllable as the pummeling unfolded.
I shall always remember that wonderful night and performance by Mr Hessler.
Would like to pick something apart but can't. Right on with all. Still think Garbers is the right call. God, would I love to see them go against the usual grain this Saturday night.
Great analysis per usual. Quick interrogatory: Was Tom Donahue's jersey number 42? Cannot recall.

Terry was actually #64. Good shot of him here in the great 65 game.

Also, good to know you.
Don't mean to drone on and on about the good old days, but if you haven't seen this it's pretty good.

Btw, Bob Apisa became a top Hollywood stunt man and then movie stunt coordinator. Bob Stiles owned a couple of sushi restaurants.
Great sharing the history with you!

And thank you for the article! It is marvelous!
I really miss Chris Roberts. He was a rock.
I did not know he had passed....man that socks. Chris and Fred Hessler are two Bruin announcers I remember the most.
