Your comment on running up between the tackles from compressed formations is spot on. Not even remotely successful and was the same strategy they employed in the second half against ASU when the Sun Devils dominated and pulled away. I thought I was watching a replay. The first two series of the game where Kelly never used the same play twice had the Oregon D gassed and confused. It seems when he has time to script a series or two in the week before the game he's inventive and clever. After halftime he defaults to run from compressed sets, throw on 3rd down against an aggressive pass rush with negative results every time
Re: the talent gap, with the exception of a couple of years courtesy of Brett Hundley and company, the program has been mired in such mediocrity for so many years, it may be a hopeless cause even with the right coach, and definitely is with Kelly's philosophy.
The right coach can right the ship, the problem is finding the Mick Cronin of football. I like Cinci coach Fickell. Imagine him with the recruiting ground that is SoCal. Especially after his run with the Bearcats this year.
I'd love to get Fickell in Westwood, but some Bearcat alums I know are certain that he is holding out for the OSU job. Meanwhile Penn St coach James Franklin all but confirmed he's going to *$c (and that's fine because he just lost to Illinois) with the classic "no comment" quote when asked about the job, and then promptly forgot who he is playing this week.
So when is the best time to fire a coach during the season? Asking for a friend.
Seriously though, I was surprised when USC canned their coach so early this year. With early signing in December, it is a real conundrum as to when you fire and hire to keep recruits but also give the program direction. Don’t expect to get rid of Kelly till next year, but could see it mid season.
I'm not surprised by $c firing Helton...he's been on the fan 'hot seat' almost immediately after winning the Rose Bowl. That opens the door for them to start talking to other coaches now, rather than later.

Nah there’s always hope. The wheel turns, that’s the way of the world.

Cincinnati to UCLA pipeline!
I Wish! Where is the Genie when you need him?

Make him an offer he can’t refuse…
I am really getting tired of Chip Kelly's ineptitude.
Ugh. It’s hard to see where two more wins come from. I suppose Colorado looks very winnable, but after that…of course USC is always possible I guess.
Colorado and Berkeley. That’s the easy question.
The hard one is whether we beat Southern Cal which uhhhhhhhh ask again later.
I still think we beat $c this year. They are a study in under performing this year.

I would have fired him after year 2, even paying the buyout kind of made sense at that point. But now I’m sure it’s next year, but early or late?

I’m not surprised they fired him, just that it happened after game 2. I guess you do get a jump on scouting who’s available.
