Good selection, but let's all remember who he will be working for. So, I'm optimistic that this was a good choice and probably the only logical choice, but there is still that elephant in the room (if I'm READING THE ROOM correctly) and that would be Jelly 2.0. Not sure how Chesney will navigate through that.
I want Marty gone too, but I guess Coach Chesney can take the Cronin approach and basically ban the guy. Marty has nothing to do with MBB from what I've heard. The best outcome would be a clean slate in the athletic department though.
Jarmond has essentially been frozen out of basketball entirely (both men's and women's). It's another reason why I'm hesitant to move on from Cronin unless everything above him is cleared out, because if Jarmond is allowed to make a basketball hire it would set that program back much more than it is currently.
I would put it another way, "Why even have THIS AD if he is frozen out of UCLA's most historically relevant men’s team and its biggest revenue generating women’s team?"
There’s a theory floating around that Wasserman is backing Jarmond through this coaching hire as payback for how the end of the Chip Kelly era went down. The theory is that Jarmond will be now to use a successful coaching hire to pivot to a new job in the near future.
I don't much believe it either - more of the opinion that Jarmond is still in his position because Wasserman, as the biggest whale for the AD, wants him there.
Got this from Bolch's "UCLA Unbocked" re the contemplated RB bolt to SoFi...
"At what cost?
"Those longing for UCLA’s football team to move to SoFi Stadium might experience sticker shock for parking and concessions based on my recent experiences at two other stadiums that host pro teams.
"Parking at the Intuit Dome was $70 at the lot across the street when the UCLA men’s basketball team faced Arizona earlier this month.
"Two slices of pizza and a bottle of Pepsi Zero at the Chase Center was $44.01 when the Bruins faced California last week.
"If the Bruins open the 2026 season at SoFi Stadium, get ready to dip into your savings."
i don't even go to games at Rose Bowl. too far, too much of a pain in the ass. But it's a very aesthetically pleasing to watch on tv. I have been to Sofi twice, and i submit that the time to get in and out of the stadium and parking lot is longer than any traffic you might wait in to get to the Rose Bowl. Sofi is a terrible venue, especially for college football.
There is precedent for that working out well (Cignetti/IU)....My youngest goes to Coastal Carolina who JMU just destroyed on Saturday. They are a well coached team!
Smart, absolute home run hire for where we are as a program. I think we’ll reach a bowl game next year easily, and I expect we’ll be further along than that.
Still need to get rid of Jarmond but a new day has dawned for UCLA football.
“To me,” Chesney said in a video for the Harbaugh Coaching Academy, “it’s that ability to celebrate little successes and then you watch someone just kind of sit up a little taller, swell up a little bit more with pride and then they want to build that confidence, they want to repeat that success.”
Sounds pretty Wooden-esque to me. So refreshing! 💙💛
Watch his press conference from this morning on the article I posted about UCLA finally getting a coaching search right. At about 19:30, he speaks about how he turns young men into me.
Not sure the Chip Kelly hiring was an actual search, if memory serves me correctly. I thought a lot of that was initiated through Troy Aikman. Many of us were excited at the Kelly hiring. Also, we got pumped up over the Neuheisel/Chow/Walker triumvirate. Oh, to be a Bruin!
I was hoping that another search committee would be working in the background to conduct a search for a new AD and ultimately hire a competent candidate as well. But he's still here. I think that's even more remarkable (and unfortunate)...
Congratulations to JMU HC Chesney on becoming the newest $6M man at UCLA! Lots of hopium now available in time for the holidays and yet another rebuild. Looking forward to seeing either the revival of a highly competitive UCLA football program with Cignetti-like results, or maybe a 5-year, Big-10 HC training opportunity to achieve 6 to 8 wins max, plus toilet bowl invitation (mediocrity re-established). Regardless of the eventual outcome from this coaching change, he'll have to try to succeed in spite of the continuing dysfunction at the AD level and above. Now that the Bruins reportedly have a new HC, expect lots of jelly donuts to be handed out, along with that familiar quote to be repeated soon: "I’m very confident in my ability to hire coaches that win championships. I’ve done it." [it's sounding more like a bad curse]
So, everyone needs to be "grounded" at this point. My understanding is that nothing is signed yet and this is a Jelly 2.0 setup. Hence it probably won't be a signed and sealed done deal until JMU finishes its season, one way or another. Schools/organizations like NFL teams, etc. do this all the time. They get agreement in principal and verbally from their choice, then they LEAK. In the case of College Football, they do this to solidify their recruits and their NIL prospects. I have no doubt Chesney is the guy and he will commit 100% once JMU's season completes, but again this is Jelly 2.0... anything can happen and when it means a negative result for our UCLA teams, with Jelly 2.0 it usually does.
I like it. I was afraid we'd go for another fossilized retread.

sounds too elaborate to be true

Wasserman is ok with alleged Shelter 37 tax fraud? When you have money, the rules don't apply.
💯

Two more dominoes need to fall:
Bruins stay at RB
Jarmond gets canned
Will sanity prevail???
I really really hope so
I hope you're right, Mollydog.
(dangit, there's that evil hope raising its pesky little head already!)

Welcome Coach Chesney, congratulations UCLA. Next: new AD and mbb coach.
so I guess i'm actually going to watch JMU games because he's probably going to bring half his roster.
There is precedent for that working out well (Cignetti/IU)....My youngest goes to Coastal Carolina who JMU just destroyed on Saturday. They are a well coached team!
I watched them crush Coastal Carolina this weekend in anticipation of his hiring.
Darn. I had reached such a safe emotional space this year, but now I will have hope again.
Welcome, Coach Chesney. LFG!!! 💙🏈💛
🤣 Safe no more my friend! 💙💛

Yep. 💯💯💯 we need Donut Head Jelly 2.0 and his Holes gone!
I am sooooooo happy, I have no words to express how I am over the moon!!! 💙💛💙💛
Chesney is a perfect fit. He is steady, intelligent, dynamic, has great character, and mostly he's just awesome! 🤣
Welcome to our beloved UCLA, Coach Chesney! 💙💛💙💛
Looks like Tim Skipper might be headed to Cal Poly. Seems like such a great guy. Wish him all the best.
I'm now a Cal Poly fan.
Our son went to Cal Poly. Such a great school. I hope Skipper tears it up there!

UCLA actually ran a coaching search, identified their candidates and hired their first choice. Remarkable.
Not so fast my friend! You could say the same thing about Chip, at least as far as hiring their first choice.

While, admittedly, I got on the Chip Kelly bandwagon after he was hired, I did warn against his hiring beforehand.
