After Losing Suspended LSU Game, 9-5, UCLA Faces Elimination Against Arkansas
The Bruin bullpen could not contain the Tiger bats.

Things took a bad turn for the Bruins against LSU. With the Tigers beating UCLA by a score of 9-5, the Bruins must now win three games in three days in order to make the CWS Finals. To make it worse, the first game will be played tonight when UCLA takes on the #3 seed Arkansas Razorbacks at 4 pm.
Yesterday, Razorbacks’ starter Gage Wood threw just the third no-hitter in CWS history. It would be easy to think that the fact that UCLA won’t see Wood today makes his accomplishment inconsequential to the Bruins, but you would be wrong. One by-product of Wood’s no-no is the fact that the entire Arkansas bullpen got the day off.
Meanwhile, between yesterday and this morning, UCLA head coach John Savage depleted his pen by using eight pitchers against LSU including the logical potential starter for tonight’s game Ian May.
If there’s a silver lining to that situation, it’s the fact that only two of the Bruin relievers threw more than 17 pitches this morning and May only hurled 16. So, he could still potentially get the nod tonight.
With this game being an elimination game, Savage needs to make the call on if he will opt to start May or go with someone else. If he picks someone else, the next question is does he go back to Michael Barnett who pitched on Saturday against Murray State or does he start someone else? It is, after all, an elimination game. So, all hands should be on deck.
Last Time Out
In the top of the first against LSU with Dean West on first, Roch Cholowsky hit into a fielder’s choice. West was out at second but LSU didn’t try for the double play. So, Cholowsky was safe at first. Mulivai Levu singled through the left side to give the Bruins runners on first and second. Roman Martin doubled down the left field line, scoring Cholowsky. AJ Salgado hit a hard grounder just to the right of second base which was fielded by LSU’s Daniel Dickinson but there was no play. Levu scored and Martin moved over to third on the play. Payton Brennan hit a slow roller towards first which was fielded by LSU starter Anthony Eyanson. Martin scored as Eyanson took the out at first. After a half inning, the Bruins led 3-0.
In the bottom of the first, the Tigers roughed up Bruin starter Landon Stump for four runs. With runners on the corners and one out, LSU right fielder Jake Brown singled up the middle, scoring Ethan Frey and moving Steven Milam to third. Jared Jones then homered over a leaping Salgado to give LSU a 4-3 lead.
In the bottom of the third, Stump had trouble finding the plate and walked Frey and Milam. At that point, John Savage brought in Chris Grothues in an attempt to prevent further damage. Grothues immediately got two outs but then he gave up a single through the middle which scored Frey. That run was still charged to Stump and LSU now led 5-4.
Then, the rains came, and so began the rain delay. After about three hours of waiting, the game was suspended until this morning.
The game was resumed from the top of the fourth since the inning hadn’t started when the umps stopped the game for the rain. Casan Evans took to the mound for LSU, replacing Eyanson who had started last night and Grothues was replaced by Wylan Moss
Evans responded by allowing just two runs over 4-1/3 innings before exiting with one out in the eighth. Cooper Williams kept the Bruins from tying the game and Chase Shores earned the save with a scoreless 1-1/3 innings.
In the bottom of the fourth with two outs, Moss gave up a single to Derek Curiel and followed with a walk to Frey. Another single by Milam scored Curiel and moved Frey to third. Jake Brown dropped a liner right that took a hop in front of Salgado to score Frey and put the Tigers up, 7-3. That was it for Moss as Savage brought in Cal Randall for the final out of the inning.
LSU would add an insurance run in the bottom of the seventh before the Bruins could mount their best rally since the first inning.
In the top of the eighth with one out. Levu singled through the right side and Martin was hit by a pitch. After an LSU pitching change, Salgado walked to load the bases and Payton Brennan scored Levu on a fielder’s choice that left UCLA with runners on the corners. Blake Balsz took a 2-2 pitch up the middle, scoring Martin and moving Brennan up 90 feet. Cashel Dugger walked to load the bases again and that was it for Williams as LSU turned to Shores. He immediately got Call to hit a grounder to short for the third out. After seven and a half, UCLA now trailed 8-5.
The Tigers added another insurance run in the bottom half of the inning and it was 9-5 heading into the ninth.
In the top of the ninth, UCLA went down 1-2-3 with three ground outs and, now, the Bruins will face Arkansas in an elimination game at 4 pm PT on ESPN.
